Running.... not quite there yet. But the truck & powerteam are inside the same building for the first time in 30 years, so that's progress.

Did get the rubber bellows for t-case vac shift mechanism. Amazed that these pieces for 62-64 t-case are still available.

Installed new p-brake cable and adjuster dust shield. Final installed p-brake drum & nut. dropped in shifter & new shift boot. Tranny & & t-case are complete & ready to install. Ignore the jeep oil pan & balancer, they've gone to a better place.

Cleaned & painted BH & mount ears. Found 4 good used rubber mounts. installed new clutch boot & breather. Found new clutch release bearing. Ready to bolt tranny to engine.

And now we need a truck to place all these old new parts into. Look what got shoved inside the shop, on concrete for the first time in god knows how long.

FWIW I am running the pre-71 parking brake cable with H42 in the 64, 65 and '68. Yes it's snug, but it does fit

Thanks Mark!
How about the speedo cable? Is there a longer cable needed or available with the early screw attachment to speedometer?

Ditto with the speedo cable. There WAS a longer cable offered. A long time ago. For the 45 interestingly enough. I used one in my 40 when I swapped in the H42 (now H41) and one in the lwb45. Since the lwb has the most use, I finally wore out the cable. Rather than use up my last NOS 45 cable, I tried the standard 40 cable in the 45. It fit.

Rather than use up my last NOS 45 cable...

Isn't it funny how we try avoid using the best parts sometimes? I've done the same thing a couple times.

It's that whole Wayne's World/we're not worthy thing!

I don't have the same reservations about the swb, because it's a resto. I'm getting ready to put an NOS water pump on it. And some of the NOS stuff that's gonna go on the rebuilt front axle is wicked cool.

Sorry for the hijack Jim.

Same here: all my FJ40/60 junkers is/was built outta junk that is not good enough to put on a customer truck, but isn't quite junky enough to scrap.

*Except* this FJ45, which is getting the best used parts that have been stashed away "for that really good truck someday".

Back on thread: The original speedo cable is disconnected from the speedo, it fell outta the firewall hole onto the floor when I was poking around under the hood. It was dried out and surface rusty, but it's been saturated with lock-ease and spun with a drill, seems OK now. I'll plan on re-using it for now with the H42.

(Image of Luke Skywalker falling down the hole after finding out Darth Vader is his father) NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Threaded speedometer heads are too valuable to risk screwing up with an old cable. Ever hear of a guy named Murphy?

I will send you a new cable and we can work out some barter later.

Cable shipped today Jim.;)

Very nice, I like the Toecutter tub seat, is it at the upholstery for a tune up?

Progress report:
Plazzed off the sticky-outy part of frame mount for rear V8 tranny mount. Good enough to clear the t-case & PTO box.

Plazzed off most of frame mount for engine, but they were partially covering the rivet holes for OEM engine mounts. Alberto stopped by for lunch and got to work with a cutoff and grinder, removing all the old weld & exposing 4 good rivet holes on each side. Thanks Alberto!

I considered installing a new brake MC and using the like-new drums, but closer inspection revealed some rust where lines were clipped to chassis & 54 year old flex hoses that were cracking. So all the 9mm brake lines were removed.

Removed homebrew fuel line, hoses and generic electric fuel pump, to be replaced by OE stuff.

Pushed it outside to hose off the dusty/dirty engine bay.

Bolted in the 3 frame mounts.

Rear was straight bolt in w/ 3/8 hardware.

Both of the front mounts bolted in w/ 3 out 4 bolts lining up perfectly. One hole was off by about one hole diameter. Thought this might be because the mounts were from 1978, going onto F powered frame, but comparing to a 1968 frame shows the change occurred between 62 & 68.

Anyways, drilled the missing hole in frame, bolted in frt mounts w/ 7/16 on PS and 3/8 on DS.

Primed and painted areas where V8 mts and batt box were ground off.

Ready for power train to drop in.

CMCC here you come!

Slightly out of order, first the eagle takes flight from the constraints of the engine stand, receives 1979 bellhousing, diaphragm clutch & flywheel, engine mounts, clutch slave:

Then the tranny is wrassled onto the back of the BH. This one fought me for a while, but finally fell together. Finally got to sling the whole assembly toward the engine bay.

So now the powerteam is just sitting on the mounts. Today it will get jiggled around and bolted down, head bolts retorked, install VC, air cleaner, PCV hose...

Important brakes question:

Has anybody tried a combination of manual (non-power assist) master cylinder, dual circuit with 4runner calipers and GM RDB?
Successful or unsuccessful?

Math indicates not possible to make enough brake pressure for 4WDisc without a power boost setup.
