Bumping an old thread to see if there are any current finds with shoulder belts anyone has been using? Got another little human on the way and would just feel better have a bench with shoulder belts on it.
I welded a tab into the corner of the MT family cage and welded a nut on to it for my harness and repurposed it for the universal 3 point belts I'm now using. I went with the universal belts because you have options for the length of the latch side of the belt, which becomes important when installing a child seat.
The seat is secured to the track in three places and the track bolts are rated at 2,000lbs a piece. The seatbelt is anchored to the seat frame.
There is room below the modified MasterCraft 41" seat for tool rolls. I also set the seat frame up with tracks in order to accommodate a future tray build.

Interested to see your design.

It’s not finalized yet but this is the best layout I could come up with. I’m 6’3” and can sit in the back without hitting the roll cage (I’m going to pad the cage too)

The seats are very comfortable but I wouldn’t want someone my size riding back there long.

Oh and just ignore the rust haha

Curious what these seats came out of?

I had a bench seat out of an ATV in mine when I bought it. It has three bucket seats and racing belts.

Where are you located? I'll give it to you if your within reasonable driving distance.

Edit: I realize this is an old thread, but it applies to anyone.

If you want the bench seat, come pick it up and it's yours.

Going to try the 3rd row seats from a early 2000's Tahoe:

They fit on top of the wheel wells, fold and have shoulder belts built in. When my kids get tall, they might not fit thought...

Lots on used sites for <$200

Hey all, I just recently purchased an FJ40, and although I don't know the details (purchased from a dealer) - I thought I'd share the bench setup it came with for inspirational purposes. It's pretty nice, even though I think I'd rather it came with jump seats. I can't imagine anyone other than kids fitting on these, and I don't have or want kids! At least it folds up for cargo/storage. Anyhoo, here's the pics:

Wish I knew what that seat was!

That is definitely a besttop seat. For jeeps but fit FJ40's just fine. Hit the search magnifying glass thing up top of page and the model number will pop up after searching besttop rear seat.

I installed the same Bestop seat a while back in my 40. I’d recommend it as a good option to put a couple kids in the back. Maybe even to squeeze a couple adults back there. Though when the seat is in use (not folded forward), there’s VERY little room for gear behind the seat. The same for really any bench seat option. A couple photos and short write-up in my build thread: My 1978 FJ40: Fixes, Mods & Trips

OK gonna give this a 2020 bump up.

Time to get serious my girls will be wanting to ride in the back this summer. (2)&(5)

MasterCraft seat modified to be removable gets my vote. It is big enough for full size folks, but also bolstered enough for my 5 & 7, now 6 & 8 yo's to wheel in, safely.

@Stumpalama do you have a link or pics of the one you are referring to?

I had the same issue with my 1974 FJ40 when my son was born. I used the front passenger seat of a 1971 FJ40, and bolted it in. I attached seat belts to its frame to secure his car seat. I still have it, out in the barn, and he’s 31 now. I’ll put it in the truck and shoot a couple pictures of it for you tomorrow.

Does anyone have photos of their rear bench seat with child seats mounted? What did you do for the child seat mounts? I'm looking at the same set up for my 2 and 4 year olds.

Had the same thought in fold and tumble seat and installed a Bestop product for a Jeep that worked perfect. That said, when I actually started overlanding with my boys added the capability to add a single bucket to increase payload space... Have the matching Cordura cover for rear seat. Just need to install.
