Washing my dad's 1978 FJ40 that he brought brand new. I was about 2 or 3 in this picture in 85/86.

I wonder if the 25s sold in south America were sold with-out tops to meet import rules, and if these were the tops made in south America...similar to what you see in newer models :hhmm:

Either way, this little 25 had a lot of work done to it (even the front fenders look off) and really cool seeing pics of this interesting rig...thanks for posting them

Great thread. It makes this newbie want to keep my fj40 the way it was meant to be.

Makes you want to skip the lift, does it not :)...maybe you can just re-arc your rear springs to get rid of the sag. I have never done this, but I hear of many who have

Nice pics snowpusher...really cool seeing it in the family for so long

If you like looking at old or even new fj40 pictures go to face book and search for fj40 groups, you can look at the pictures without joining the group. Most seem to be from South America, but there are thousands of fj40 pictures among the groups. Some pictures look to be from the 60's. Lots of cool pictures of fj40 from people all over the world.

there are many more fj40 groups, fun to look at. I do wonder where all the people in what appears to South America get their softops. They have some real nice fj40's and look to do a lot of real cool offroading.

At last, my contribution to this wonderful thread. I had some issues with my scanner , but its solved now....
The pictures were taken by the PO in august 1992, probably just after the rebuild and just before it went in the garage for 20 years!!!!

Here is a picture from a guy I know. He said it is a '78 and the picture was from the early 80's.

I found this guidebook, I have no idea where I got it:
Canyon Country Off-Road Vehicle Trails - Canyon Rims & Needles Areas By F. A. Barnes, 1987. If you do a search for it you can find it online and purchase a copy. Pretty cool, here's some sample pics:

I bought this FJ40 from Florin Road Toyota in Sacramento in November 1979. This picture was taken about 3 weeks later near Pinedale Wyoming where I was stationed in the Air Force. I still have the original bill of sale. I paid $7,987.

The interest rate on the loan was 15.66%. Back in the Carter days of high inflation.
Wow! do you have it payed off yet?;) Yea, I remember those days.

My 78

Here is a picture of the 78 after I bought it in Denver on vacation and drove it home to Fort Worth the following month. This picture was taken somewheres just south of the Springs...June of 1979.

The dealerships in Denver still had 78 s on the lot well into 1979.
I paid 7200 if I remember correctly.

Still have it with 135 k miles. Took it down to the frame in 97 and havent put more than a couple hundred miles on it. With my luck I m afraid someone will hit it so, it only comes out at night and on one lonely stretch of highway to and from my Dad s house.

HvyJet, was there not a Toyota dealership in FWT back then, or was that an impulse buy while in the Rockies? Post a pic of it now!!!

Well actually it was sort of an impulse buy in a way. New wife and I were in Denver for a week with her clan and I just had to have a jeep after being in the Rockies. Well my brother in law was a service manager at a VW dealership there and said "nope, no jeep for you, buy a landcruiser" So, we spent the last day looking at two dealerships where they had 4-5 1978 s still. I would have bought one right then and there but figured I could find a 78 in DFW maybe. Well stopped by old Quality Toyota in NRH and they laughed at the idea and were put out that I would buy last years model instead of the one 79 they had on the property. Anyway called the two dealerships in Denver and ended up buying from Burt Toyota because theirs had a factory a m radio for the same price as the other guys.

This is what it looks like now, I know the paint is not quite the same color and thats a real sore spot actually. It s a nice color the Spies Hecker folks color coded but is off a shade. When I retire I plan on pulling it all apart again and painting it correct. Until then we take a spin once a month if it needs it or not.

Damn...she's still a beauty. And, I have the same front bumber on mine (except one of the PO's made matching bends on the corners).

NIce cruiser but flip the bezel. Since your runnning stock wheels I would dump the fender flares when you repaint it. To nice of a cruiser to do any heavy duty four wheeling so I would go back to the stock look. But that just me. I would also install a Toyota PTO winch and stock bumper.

I'm sure a dealer would give to $7,200 for it now. I never priced them in the seventies or eighties. Bought my first new car in 73 before I got married. Then not again until the late eighties after I was divorced:hhmm:
