Found this pic in the newspaper so it's a good excuse to bump this epic thread up before it get lost.

Story is people need to commute to obtain fresh produces in the remote area from Waeapo to Namrole in Buru Island of Maluku, Indonesia. It's a 3 hours stretch covering 34 miles of muddy, steep cliff, and 5 feet depth river. So they built this thing called 'Grandong'.

It's based on FJ40, nothing fancy. Frames stretched to 200". Rows for people, rear bed for the goods. Disc brakes, 4wd, muddy tires. And off you go for rice and veggies. If you're sick and able to walk, it takes 12 hours walking to your nearest clinic in Waeapo. Talk about tough luck! Oh yes, sometimes you run out of luck and just die. :bang: These FJs literally keep them alive there. Long live the FJ!

That snorkel Is the best part!

Forever Young

Now this is a thread I can sink my teeth into. These early photos of my 72 FJ40 were taken in 1974 - I can tell from the baby moon hubcaps I was running in that timeframe. But what good are old photos if you don't have anything to compare to? The "before and after photo" is a composite of the one I took the day I brought my TLC home in June 1972 (with my girlfriend standing next to it). The other half is a reshoot of both 35 years later. I've taken pretty good care of both over the years.

That is great! I love the comparison image.

That is really cool! Cruiser looks sharp!

Then and Now

Here are a couple more composites to go along with the one above. Wish I could say I've aged as well as my cruiser.

My first Cruiser a 67 fj40 in 1995 I was 24 and exicted to buy a 28 year old rig. :steer: I actually had to sell my 85 toyota pickup to come up with the money to buy it...worth it :)

And this is what it looked like after I sold it. The guy who bought it was pretty short so He chopped the top down 6", you can tell by the windshield and the short side wall of the hardtop just below the side windows. I stopped by and seen it just after he got done with it. When I sat in it my head was touching the headliner  Sure gave it a different look.

He chopped the top and the value, looks like it was a nice cruiser. (WAS). Take the top off and buy another windshield frame and it will look normal again. I see the for sale signs in it, guess he did not like it after he chopped it.

Well, I sold it to him (John) in 2000 and he was probably in his early-mid 60's and looks like he sold it in 07' so could have been health issue's...who knows. But I agree, a windshield frame and lose the hardtop and you'll un-FUBAR it ;) Other than that and the highlighter yellow paint job, he did a nice build on it.

So in the current shot, are those the same pants/shirt from 1972?

:D:D

Great pix !!

I'm impressed!

Well the shirt is the same. My girlfriend/wife made me the shirt shortly after I bought the Cruiser in 72. I couldn't bring myself to throw it out, though it's pretty thread bare now. I figured if you're going to do a re-shoot you may as well do it right. I shot these "reenactment" photos for a photo book I made of the Cruiser covering 1972-2011, complete with action photos, stories and data (repair records, gas prices over the years, etc.) and the like. Turned out pretty well and I've been having a blast with it.

Here are some close ups.
