I recently decided it was time to upgrade the lights on the 46 and really didn't want to bolt a light bar on the front. On the other side while I love the LED Technology I love the classics head light look of the 40 and adding some angle eye'd weird looking thing was not for me.

In the past what i would do is upgrade the reflectors to some H4's and then use some 100 /130W bulbs . This of course means I need to make a piggy back loom and add an extra two relays to get the power direct from battery as the factory loom and switching will not support the amp draw.

After doing some research I settled on some LED Bulbs and $30 later had them in hand from Amazon

Amazon product ASIN B07FRG4NSH
The bulbs themselves are a direct H4 replacement and even have some funky little cooling fans on them.

Before putting them in I figured I Should test the 24V theory so I just hooked one up, straight away you can see a significant increase in light and this is without the reflector assist.

Being that I had sealed beam first I swapped in a set of IPF H4 Reflectors . I have used both the IPF and Hella units and been very happy with both. Narva are also worth a look in but harder to come by. I avoid the Chinese stuff as I find it rusts.

With the reflector fitted I dropped in the bulb and stood back to check it out . As you can see there is more than a small amount of difference. I will get some real time driving experience in the next few days but in the shop it is a significant increase in quality.

For the geeks among us Amp draw on the hi beam is 6.2 amps so the factory loom and fuse etc handles it no issues.

So far well worth the $30 and being 12 - 24V easy option for all 40's

Looks promising, keep us informed.

What housing did you use for the bulb? I still have sealed units sylvania i believe last time i swapped.

I used the IPF ones but any h4 7" will do. Since the jeep runs 7" there are lots of options

Nice I’ve been wanting to try this myself. With my h4’s
I also run those high wattage bulbs but I have been using the stock wires no relay setup for a few years now I was going to go with the relays but grew lazy over the years and haven’t upgraded yet nor bought any fancy
LED. Thanks for this post

I’m in the same boat as you ... 28? Years using hella copy h4’s lenses (jc Whitney) and halogen bulbs... no relays

I have been looking for a natural light bulb led ... not the bright white ... can’t find anything good in a warm color

Info please.............. can the IPF glass lens be separated from the reflector housing?

So far well worth the $30
Sorry, but looks awful. A lot of scattered light/glare, I don’t know if any is aiming to the ground. 🤦🏻‍♂️ Those never work properly in "fluted" glass headlights. Oncoming traffic will hate you. 🙈

Agreed. LEDs on classic cars just don’t work very well and look out of place.

Keep it all Toyota and go with the upgraded housing/wire harness kit... Less than $50 for the kit and available from any Toyota dealer.
