I was able to nab some shop time tonight and started boring your long side D60 yoke for shortening and rewelding to the original shaft. I'll post up some progress pics as I get closer.

Matthew is making me a custom length D60 axle shaft from the old one. This will make for a great trail spare, once I have one made out of chromoly, until then it will be my main. Here are some pics he sent me.

I need a long night in the barn, looking forward to when this semester is done. Summer classes won't be as time consuming. Anyway, the front housing is almost done. Just needs a few more welds, some light grinding, and paint. Hoping to get a lot done in May as Memorial Day weekend is the goal, would like to have her ripping up the trails.

I made some progress on your longside inner axle today. The yoke should be ready to press on for welding and the beef up sleeve is prepped and slid on to weld in behind the yoke. I'll post pics when I get the yoke on. I will test fit it in the housing before welding.

Mike said it doesn't have to be pretty, just strong. I know it'll be a weak spot, but it'll make for a great trail spare when I get my chromoly shaft. Thanks again Matthew.

Long shaft rework

I only need to stop by Mike's shop and test fit the shaft prior to welding. Once the length seems good, I'll weld the yoke, slide the beef-up collar to the yoke and weld it up!

Anyone think I should temporarily install a 1/2 to 3/4" piece of all thread through the yokes with nuts to hold the yokes in place during welding? I don't know if I should expect any yoke distortion.

Looking good Matthew, Mike should be out there most evenings this week. We have a competition this weekend and he has a long "to do list" before we leave. Two weeks left in this grueling semester and then I'll have time to spend out there.

I agree the rear will be a lot easier to link, but I want the front done first, why set up the steering twice. I'm not far, but it seems that you would have to change the steering?
Tire size is 39.5 Iroks to start, most likely will go to a 42" Iroks later on. Terrian; mostly extreme, the guys I wheel with have 40" to 49" tires, one tons to rockwells to unimogg axles, rocks, logs, hills all types of terrian, the fun stuff.

Rear first because it's easier and it eliminates axle wrap. Why engineer an anti-wrap that works and doesn't screw up your anti-squat and then rip it all off later?


It really makes sense to do both at once so you aren't making compromises based on something you're going to change later.

Now that I see the second page of the thread it looks like my advice is a bit late any way/

I was able to get the longside axle welded and test fitted. Dropped it off to John today and helped a bit with swapping his 39" Iroks from six to eight lug wheels. It was pretty cool to see how Inner Air Locks work too.

Keep posting I am reading. Whats the reason for narrowing the axles? Axle brace came out great, but it looks like coils will be hard to fit. I'm sure you have a plan and hope to see the results soon.

Well the semester has finished an d I'm back out in the barn. Some minor set backs, took a steel pipe to the mouth and lost 1/2 of one tooth and a 1/4 of another, good times. Anyway there was a few reasons for narrowing the axle, first to move the 14 bolt pinion more toward the passenger side to better line up with the transfer case, another reason was to keep the look of a stock FJ40, and finally I was bored waiting for parts to arrive. I made some progress and will post some pics up later. It feels good to be greasy and dirty again!

Teeth are fixed, took some $$ away from the project Anyway did a fair amount of work over the weekend. grounded and then filled and grounded some more on the axle, added some paint. Dismounted my Inner Air Locks and tires from my Aluminum Centerline Hell Cat rims, which are for sale, and mounted to good old steelie wagon wheels. Put the front axle under the 40 to where most likely she'll be linked. Added the wheels, rear is at ride height and front will come down a bit. Next up is the steering, have a few different ideas, it will be full hydraulic, either single or dual ram. Matthew dropped off a dual ram from a Hi-Lo, but still thinking about the single ram, it'll come to me soon? Anyway here are some pics;

My exhaust was in the way of the links, so it got cut. Took the radiator out to have more room to link it. Everything is looking real tight, but do-able. Going to mock it up with some PVC pipe to get and idea of the length of the links. Moved the big wood crate last night and got a few shots of the side view. We're hoping to have it linked this week. Also I took the steering out of it, going full hydraulic. Pics- first is the side view, second is of how sharp it will turn, and third is where we will stuff some link mounts.

Not much today, started to play around with the links, not much time spent out there. By the looks of it, the drive shaft will not be much of a factor. Have to re route the fuel line and cut away from the bottom of the motor mounts,but they are massive so thats not a worry. Taped some PVC pipe in place as to where the links will go. Did the lower ones first and then hand held the upper passenger side for a few pics. Project time for the week has got chopped due to family birthdays and such. Most likely next week will have more to report. Does anyone know what a rams horn exhaust manifold is worth?
