Finally, locate the source of the oil. This was in a cold engine. I will replace the valve stem seals in this cylinder.

I have fresh rebuilt 2F -5spd and you’re dreaming if you think your going to pull 65-70 up hill….slight incline no problem, kingsbury grade not happening.
Never dreamed or Kingsbury grade at those speeds. You are correct at maintaining 65 in freeway driving as a goal.

Not sure what Kingsbury grade is but I regularly take a Freeway with multiple 6% ascents and my F.5 is fine accelerating up to the max speed of 130kph (~80mph) in 4th gear, as long as I am already at a speed that allows to open the secondary body of the carburetor (I think it's around 50mph in 4th).

Done this multiple time, stuck on the right lane behind a truck at ~55mph in an ascent, pressing the gas all the way down, the secondary opens (in one shot on a F carb) and puts a big kick all the way to 80mph, which helps a lot to insert on the passing lane with the flow.

For driving a long time at stabilized speed it's happier at ~70mph.

Kingsbury grade is a steep 2 lane road from Reno Nevada up and over to Lake Tahoe. Un less in a sports car, no one is doing 70 mph on it. I agree with you that the 2F motor is capable reasonable freeway speeds. I try not to run over 3k RPM, which currently gives 70+ mph.

I apologize if I missed it, what octane gas are you running and do you have an aftermarket cam in it? I have a ‘76 block bored 0.40 that I’m putting a ‘74 head on then fuel injection.
At the beginning, I tried the regular gas one and didn’t feel it was right. After playing with the timing, she is running on 93 gas now, and it feels much more stable. No aftermarket cam.

I try to keep my FJ40 at below 3000rpm. 2800ish is 70 is. Really looking at putting a five speed in this year. I live in Reno Nevada and am forced to take freeways alot.

It means you already have 3.7 ratio diff, with 4.1 diff we are already a touch above 3000rpm at 70mph.
80mph should be ~3500rpm on mine (with 7.50R16 tires) but it's doing fine. Noisy but engine is fine at this speed, it's a L6 it needs to run from time to time.
But anyway, no tachometer + ear plugs = no worries

Obviously if it's your daily and doing a lot of miles every year it may be a different story. Wouldn't say no to a 5-speed if it was an easy swap and keeping the originality of the truck (but it's not on a 1974).

Not big hills, just maintaining hills and slopes around Reno/Carson city. I can keep it around 70 now with 4spd but I have to run above 3000rpm (my self imposed limit)
Nobody said Kingsbury grade!!! Couldn't maintain 65 in my SL600!!

I have 4.10 gears, but with 33 inch tires.

That is great news. Did it actually fix the oil issue, or just reduce it?
I checked it twice after fixing it, and it looks good. It is running, and there is no issue. I don't want to look inside anymore
:)
