Well it's been coming up for 20 years since I drove my bj42 too much work has gotten in the way but lately some developments.
My mechanic has agreed to drop by and we would look at those electrical gremlins so to get an inspection then it will be put on the road soon as the snow is gone.
In the mean time I'm driving the wifes 60 series and what a pleasure to hear that 3b hum as I drive it while getting the odd look and thumbs up !
Though the other daily driver has better heat, faster in traffic and a few other niceties , nothing is more exciting than driving a Landcruiser !
As work is finally allowing some time I have been working on going over my old drawings and while making improvements and beneficial modifications for a second gen stainless half tub that will include outer rockers.
I found a 1979 fj40 that is well ... pooched ! rawhide, the rear tub inside and out well... So it will be put in the garage early 2026 and I will be stopping all the old metal off from the door post to rear. The new body will be in #304 Stainless steel-16ga. inside and out. I believe the original 1/4 panels were 18ga. Stainless is twice the strength of steel so it will be close to 3x the strength of the original. Which reminds me when I spun out going down a hill on an icy road, there was a guard rail at the bottom with a river below and as we spun round about 3-4 times we were wondering if we were going over the edge. Luckly we made contact the the metal guard rail as the back of the 42 above the tail light and came to a stop. We got out and no damage to the rear body.
Out of all the variations I prefer the 40/2 , great off road, dependable, one of a kind, Ultimately the coolest ! 60's can be practical off road for loading up and look pretty stoked with lifts and tires and ... Seems like the appreciation for the 60's are going up in price. I've also found the 70 series are a blast to drive as well and as a Landcruiser with a 3b how can it be bad ? As for the fj45 I'm also looking forward to putting it on the road for 2026. So 2026 is looking like the year of the Cruiser !
