Euro-spec headlights

Mot, dis you keep your stock lighting setup . ? Koito 55/60 ..? only 2 headlamps in low beam and 4 in high beam . ?

In case I didn't make myself clear I kept/have the bulbs that came with my rig (H4 55/60), but not the OEM Koito's.

The outer H4 switches between "low" and "high" (JDM/Euro models do, but the US-spec 80 has a "fixed" HB4(or 3?) in the same spot).

The inner housing for the JDM 80's occupied by the H3 fogs (with yellow cover), and the Euro-spec housing has the H1 highbeam in there, while the US-spec has a highbeam also, but in HB4(or 3).

OK, I did try tweaking the high beams last night, but instead of staying up and posting the pics I fell asleep between my kids.

Anyway... I'll just try to post the comparison pics with the JDM set-up and the adjusted Euro set-up (not sure how good of an adjustment I had done though).

Note: Naturally little more of the left side will illuminate brighter with the JDM lights and the right with the Euro lights.

Now that I've looked at the side-by-side comparison pics I don't think there's a big/clear difference between the JDM and Euro headlights.

Looking at the last two pics, maybe the Euro lights throw out slightly more light, but that may be due to the color of the H1 bulbs that I've picked out.

Anyway, IF I were a good salesman I would be saying something like: "You would not believe what a huge differenct they make! The pictures just don't do justice!!!" I took all the pics with out using any flash, but left the digi cam on "Auto" setting. Not sure if that compensated/changed anything, but...

Anyway, I was already happy with the JDM set-up and now I'll need to put those headlights back in before I blind someone. It's been a fun experiment for a lighting geek like myself. Hope some of you found it at least somewhat interesing.

Not that I should have done it, but I had driven my rig with the Euro lights still on tonight in the rain.

Although the polite people of Japan did not flash me I felt guilty in hindering their driving enjoyment (and safety).

Maybe I will have a better opinion after switching back tomorrow, but at least with the driving I did tonight (and a little last night) the Euro lights, on high, seem to spread the light a little wider.

I do not know what all of this means in comparison to the US/NA-spec headlights.

Did I miss having the JDM/OEM fogs? Maybe (very) little. But at least tonight, having the extra high beam made the night time driving in the rain at least a little more enjoyable whenever I could turn them on (wouldnt be when it's pouring or snowing or foggy though).

This kind of makes me want to try out the aftermarket multi-reflector type headlights I have sitting around in the attic and see how they compare (Outer H4 and inner H1 high's). ^^;

The PO had put in the new OEM grille on (he gave me the old "TOYOTA" styled one as well), but yes the one you see in this thread is factory.

Actually, some would prefer your set-up. They sell the conversion kit to make it look like yours in Japan, but usually costs around $1,000US!! (I've heard that the lowbeam is not that bright because of the small area that the reflectors have.) Some have put in the HID low to the outer housings to remedy that (I'm not recommending it or anyghing )

Since I have not done the quad-light conversion myself I cannot tell for certain, but AFAIK you wouldn't need a new grille, but you will need new corner markers.

Anyway, I think if your lowbeam is not up to par you could probably put brighter bulbs in the fogs to make things better, rather than shell out the $$$.

I don't know about where you are, but IIUC it is illegal to have all four light up when it's on lowbeam here.

All Aussie cruisers use this headlight set up. As I've already posted in this thread I like this set up just the reflectors aren't as good as the other set up. Not knowing the US set up i'm not sure if the headlight bezels can just be replaced or if the whole grille needs changing too.

This is the OEM quad-light "kit" they sell here and shows what you'll need to get to make the swap happen, at least for the JDM 80. I imagine it would be similar for the US-spec 80, except the LX450.
