I want to buy a pair of these E-code headlights for my 1997 US-spec rig.

-Has anyone else found a good source for them?
-Can a cooperative US dealer order them (CDan)?
-Does anyone know the Toyota part #s for them?

Thanks :steer:

The PN's were, I believe, posted on my thread yesterday.

Also, I don't think CDan can get them, so you should try Dave Stedman with "Japan4xr4" here on Mud.

Good luck!!

Yes, Mot is correct. We cannot get those part numbers.

Echo Mot on David Stedman....

I found these part numbers on ToyoDIY. I was looking for the LHD H4/H1 Euro-spec headlamp units for the later model grille (sombrero symbol vs TOYOTA) without headlamp washers or the electric levelling motor. The chrome trim pieces have the same part number as the US models so they should just swap over.

81130-60365 RH headlamp unit
81170-60185 LH headlamp unit
90075-43103 H1 bulb adapter (need 2)
90075-99031 rubber cover #1 (need 2)
90075-99029 rubber cover #2 (need 2)

I got a quote from cheaptoyotaparts.co.uk for the above parts shipped to my door for just over $600 USD. I contacted Dave at Japan4x4 and unfortunately he can't match the price.

I'm looking at getting new headlights regardless (the adjuster are seized and the lights are out of whack) but I am still debating whether or not it's worth doing the swap from the stock US 9006/9005 setup with HIRs to the European H4/H1 lights. Obviously there is a bit of wiring to do for the Euro lights. I would run them as Scott (SUMOTOY) suggested in his post, with the H4 bulb doing the regular low/high and the 100w H1 acting as integrated auxiliary lights for deserted roads and such.

Any thoughts?

I have not checked to see how much the DEPO lights are going these days (If they're still available), but if they are, I would definitely consider going with them and see if you like them. (Light output and pattern).

If you don't, then I would go the bi-xenon projector route.

It may end up close to, if not too much more than, obtaining the Euro-spec headlights.

But that is just me. ;)

Good luck, Adam!

I just pm'd Dave today about this, too funny!

I got my part numbers off my EPC so I can't remember them off the top of my head

Cheers

I was originally looking for the Depo lights but after a number of email exchanges with Daniel Stern and learning about the quality differences of OEM lights vs reverse engineered aftermarket replacements I decided I wanted OEM quality lights which left me with the option of the USDM DOT lights or the European E-code lights. Pages 21 and 30 of this report show the difference in light quality between OEM and aftermarket Depo lights: http://www.capacertified.org/press/CAPALighting3.pdf

I thought about the idea of an HID retrofit into Depo lights but I'm not a big fan of the colour and rendition of HID bulbs.

As always, thanks for your help Mot!

I'd be curious to see the part numbers you found for comparisons sake. I want to check (at least) twice and order once!

These are what I had when I searched my EPC under the European section but now I think I screw something up since I didn't put in the date.... these are generic numbers I think.... I will look up my model specific year and post when I get back home, now off to my Birthday Dinner!

Left hand side headlight:
81150-60230

Right hand side headlight:
81110-60410

Left hand side headlight, with headlamp cleaner:
811150-60180

Right hand side headlight, with headlamp cleaner:
81110-60360

I wouldn't rule out a retrofit. No halogen light can be near as bright as a proper hid system. PHILIPS 85122+ hid bulbs are pretty white, you just need to find a projector with little color at the cutoff. E46 bi-xenons with the original fresnel lens will produce a white light with little to no color at the cutoff while still producing a powerful beam.

Dunno what bulbs are in these e46's but expect new philips bulbs to be slightly yellow/whiter.

Ok here is the numbers for my 1991 HDJ81 to convert to the lights to a HDJ80L spec...

LH Light:
81170-60290 HDJ80, FZJ80..LHD
81170-60293 Finland Spec & W (headlamp cleaner)

RH light:
81130-60470 HDJ80, FZJ80..LHD
81130-60473 Finland Spec & W (headlamp cleaner)

I'm pretty sure I can just swap everything over so shipped to my place would be somewhere around 470CAD

RL4x4, save your money, just buy a good set of bulbs. I lived in the mountains where there are lots of big critters hiding around the curves, but enough traffic that I seldom had the chance to use high beams. So finding high quality low beams is a big priority for me.

I replaced my US Spec lights (and HIR bulbs) with OEM Toyota Euro Spec lights in my 97 after I smashed the front hitting an elk. I got them through Daniel Stern along with some high output H4 and H1 bulbs. :bang: I was very disappointed, low beams were not a noticable improvement over the US spec and maybe worse.

I also bought some CIBIEs 5x7 h4 headlights for my 97 Jeep Cherokee, they were awesome! Installed the exact same h4 bulb (65/70W) as the TLC Euro beams, but it was a day and night difference between the CIBIE and TLC on low beam. The CIBIEs were the best lowbeams I have had. Really opened my eyes on how important housing design is.

If you still have you heart set on getting a set of Euro light housings, PM me and I will sell you mine. I have a set of Depos in the garage that I have bought so I can do an HID conversion.

Aha! This is the kind of information I was hoping for. I figured the E-code low beams would be better than the US lows, with the highs being similar. Maybe I'll just stick with the US housings...

Thanks Jule!

I just shot cheaptoyotaparts an email with the E-Spec housings also, I don't want to start changing my wiring since I have an 81 and if I get thee lights they will be plug and play, hopefully all goes well

Cheers,
Christian

The Euro lights definitely make sense for a JDM truck, as wiring in the US housings/bulbs wouldn't be worth the effort IMO. I'd be curious to see what your impressions are.

PM sent :) I want them!

Are your lights these numbers to fit a '97?

81130-60365 RH headlamp unit
81170-60185 LH headlamp unit
90075-43103 H1 bulb adapter (need 2)
90075-99031 rubber cover #1 (need 2)
90075-99029 rubber cover #2 (need 2)

FWIW, I ended up going with normal USDM replacement lights instead of the E-code lights. The extra wiring hassle as well as the extra cost of new the E-code housings and bulbs didn't seem worth it IMO. Regardless of which lights you buy, PM IdahoDoug for a set of 3M headlight covers to protect the glass lenses.

RL4x4, whereabouts in the great white north are you?

Pic 10: Bulb in and clip on

Pic: 11: The socket thingy going on

Pic: 12: Looking good so far

So my HDJ81 has already had the stock JDM headlights changed out for the E-codes. However they they did not use the H1 bulbs for high beam on the inner housing with the female 3 prong / 2 wire plug available in the harness. Instead they were still using the 2 wire fog light plug with what I believe are H7 (2 prong) bulbs.

So I want to correct this by using the H1 bulbs as in the set up Mot has posted in the pics. However I do not have the H1 2 prong adapter as shown. Anybody know where I can get this??

Sorry pics didnt show up in last post with quote. This is the adapter I am referring to:

I can't recall since it's been so long, but I "think" those adapters came with the DEPO's that I had purchased in Japan.

Not sure if those who have done the DEPO swap/conversion got them with theirs in the US or not, but might be worth asking them.

GOOD LUCK!!

Thanks Mot.... If anyone has a set of adapters they are willing to part with please send me a PM.

So I've been doing some more research and it turns out 97-01 Honda Preludes and 04-08 Acura TSX's also use a 2 prong adapter with the H1 bulbs. Although parts stores dont seam to have a listing for it, so I will check with the dealers tomorrow.
No guarantee they are the same or will work in these E-code housing though.

I was thinking about buying some pigtail sockets and making my own adapters if necessary but one thing confuses me:
-When on low beam their is power going to both wires of the 2 wire / 3 prong female high beam plug (plug on the right in this pic)(grey 2 prong is fog lights)
-when I go to high beam their is power to only one wire on that same plug.
I dont understand why their is power going to both sides of the highbeam plug when on low beam??? Especially confusing considering that an adapter ties both wires into one prong on the H1 bulb?? Can someone explain how this works to me??
