Motivation to install the Dawes Boost Controller which has been on the shelf for a few weeks.

I found out that without the SICS being connected to a vacuum VSV that I was not getting full-fueling up top, which was especially apparent above 3000 RPM. After reconnecting the SICS and BACS my fueling was definitely much higher and a bit too smoke-laden. Recently I have been working on the IP tuning to curtail the smoke, and will also be installing an O2 bung for use with my Innovate LM-2.

EGT's are now in the 900 range when loaded and pushing up hill, and 650 cruising on the highway, and I anticipate them to go up a little once the boost is up to 25psi (20 right now) and fueling is settled.

Dawes Boost Controller installed, and running 24PSI on the GTurbo GX. Need to up the fuel now to match the boost.

Also installed the WIX Air Filter Service Gauge, and it is definitely showing that the OEM airbox + Safari Snorkel are causing a bottleneck on the intake side. Easily maxes-out the gauge at 25in of vacuum under load. Thus, I will be installing an additional air intake like Georg did in this thread. Have already wired a switch for the VSV controls.

What's "wrong" with this picture?!

Another upgrade in progress is adding the catch can. Going with on from Radium Engineering, as it is easy to add the 5/8" adapters. The hardest part is finding a location to mount!

Only got 19 pages in but, this is an amazing thread. My 1HD-T converted cruiser is on a transporter coming to my house. By the time it gets here, I will have at least a dozen things to check on it based on what I'm reading here. Thanks for taking the time to put all this together!

Good deal and glad it's been helpful! Good luck with your new acquisition, the waiting is the worst part...

Steve

Id be interested in the bracket you're coming up with for the catch can for my FT. I've been eyeing the Radiums, just haven't figured out or where to mount it.

That's the truth! Read the whole thread. Hoping my project ends up being cool like yours and CycloSteve's.

Picked up the truck today after getting the 4.88's swapped back 4.10's. Adjusted the Marks Box so that my speedo matches GPS, and definitely appreciating that 2450 RPM now = 70mph. The combination of 4.10's and the Terrain Tamer T-Case OD gear is amazing. Zero gear whine, and definitely will help with freeway mileage. Still was able to hold 5th gear going up a 1000' pass into a headwind at 70mph no problem. Boost was 18-20psi, and EGT topped at 850F. Even better that I don't have to shift out of first by 10mph, or hit 4th by 30.

Sounds like you're geared right! What profile are you using on your aneroid rod? I'm not intercooled, so I'm using the most conservative profile.

Hi Steve,
Please tell me a little more about the overdrive gear set. I emailed Georg, but no reply. What was the price and do you know how hard the install was, whether the t-case has to come out (easy on the 80), whether i works with a true HF1A, and whether it requires any grinding?
Thank you,
jan

A little technical input on the Terrain Tamer OD gear set .......
We prefer to remove the Tcase from the vehicle but you can install aftermarket gear sets, including the Terrain Tamer OD gear set, in the vehicle as well.
The Terrain Tamer OD gear set does not require and grinding or other mods to the Tcase.
All the aftermarket gear sets I've come across only work on the HF-series cases with the modular idler and input gears.
We have set up numerous HF-series cases with the 3.12:1 low range gear sets.
We have also built a few of them in conjunction with the Terrain Tamer OD gear set. @CycloSteve and @gifu are two mud members with diesel 80s who are running this setup installed by us.
I'll be more than happy to answer any tech questions regarding the install.
Hope that helps.

So the Overdrive gear set will work in factory part time HF1A case then? I'd be really interested! Love to skip swapping both locking diffs to 3.73
Tks

The HF1a is the mechanically shifted version. From what I've seen, they all use a one-piece idler shaft. We don't see a lot of these cases here in the USA.
But according to my research, the OD gear set will work since it replaces the input gear and high speed output gear but the idler gear stays the same.
The low gear set 3.12:1 will not work since it requires the modular idler gear.

I think you have this backwards. The low-range gears are 2 pieces (idler + output) but the OD gears from TT are 3 pieces (input + idler + output). Not sure what fits in the mechanical part-time case though.

The JDM HF1A in my 80 (came out of 91 ish HDJ81) is HF1A with electric shift front drive. Looks basically the same as the top of HF2A with re to CDL actuator motor etc.
I'm more interested in the overdrive than anything else

The "OD 3-piece kit" from TT is not necessary for the HF2A case ( like @CycloSteve ). We use just the input and high speed output gears and they work perfect. There's no need to replace the idler gear.

315's?
How's starting on a steep hill?

315 AT KO's, so 34.5" or so diameter. So far so good with the hills, as my driveway is 200 feet of 15 percent grade, and no clutch slipping or motor stalling (running a Terrain Tamer HD clutch). Will keep posted if any issues or drawbacks, but none that I can see at this point.

Weren't you looking at getting a H150F at some point?
