Engine plastic cover ya or nay?

If my 3FE had such a cover that said "I-6" on it, I'd love it. Keeps things underneath clean (I would think), while covering up a lot of ugly hoses and stuff. Yup, out of sight out of mind. Don't want to think about doing anything other than changing the oil when the hood is popped. And that's about all that comes up anyway. How come you V-8 guys are doing so much work in there? :flipoff2: I'm assuming it does not need to be removed for an oil change. Rattle would be unacceptable though.

My engine cover no longer fits due to cyclonic airbox and other mods. It does look a bit naked, I suppose. Perhaps I should fit an early Tundra 4.7 cover on it... :meh:

I believe the cover above is metal too. What it needs is a border around the sides and a magnet (a la tool/bolt tray) :). I could surely use that... not just for tools but to warm my burrito... though not quite as hot as if it was over an exhaust manifold.

Mines off for many(as stated in this thread) reasons......one of which is its easier to check if any critters have moved in.

About 5 years ago as I was pulling into my office (about 10 mins from home) I noticed smoke coming from under the hood, parked and popped the hood....three mice came flying out...2 were smoking. My dad happened to be walking by at the time......he was laughing his ass off.

Both the 100's had mouse or squirrel nests in them when we did the starters. We removed a large blue shop towel that had been wrapped around all kinds of stuff and used as a nest(got pics someplace). Almost every Tundra or 4.7 I see in my buddies shops has had nests and or chewed wires(knock sensor)

With the cover off at least I feel like I got a better chance...I use the Sthil blower every so often....not sure if it helps.....but I feel better

I'm keeping mine on. After owning a 40 for 18 years, I have learned not to toss anything OEM for the sake of hoarding expensive parts that I might want to reuse down the road. Best place for me to store it for now is on the engine ;) I also like the look of it as it dresses up the engine bay a bit.

I'm in the same boat as @REZARF I've kept mine on because I've never experienced any of the negative reasons stated in this thread and plus I like the looks of it. Keep in mind even if you do remove it at least save it or offer it up to someone else. It is a $275 piece of plastic, someone out there wants it.

With it off, one less cozy place for rodents to nest.

The foam blocks that come glued in were all flat or gone so the cover wouldn't sit right.

It went to the local county recycling station!

Figured it was the least I could do to give back since I get 14 mpg! Lol...

Wish my engine bay looked that good! Be wary, the brown discoloration on the top of your radiator is an indicator it needs to be replaced and could crack. It's not the worst discoloration I've seen, but it's certainly there and something to think about.

I learn something on this forum every day.
Did not know that the brown color has been associated with radiator failure.
Made me curious, I happened to have a photo of my engine for comparision:

I was typing this post to say that all they do is look cool, so I leave them on in both my Lexus and my parents' 100 because I like stuff that looks cool.

Then I remembered I use them as bolt/part trays when I'm doing repairs. Super handy.

I like it- it stayed on.

Be wary, the brown discoloration on the top of your radiator...

If the radiator looks like that, then the heater tees are likely to be in a similar condition and that is usually a more catastrophic failure.

I've been told that using non-Toyota coolant causes this discoloration and accelerated aging and brittleness in the plastic. Not sure if true or not.

The 200 cover pulls off, no nuts or bolts.

Mine wasn't cracked but it was missing one of the foam blocks. When the temperature was just right (about 35°F) it would vibrate at stop lights. I found that annoying, but I also prefer seeing the motor rather than that cover, so I took it off and never looked back. Prefer the 'naked' look.
