Engine plastic cover ya or nay?

The 100 series forum on MUD has had an almost cult list of upgrades, rituals and brouhaha that even I don't always understand. The engine cover debate is a prime example. But, I will say, the reason mine came off and never went back on, was because I actually fairly frequently, clean my throttle plate and body with cleaner and I also like easy unimpeded access to my coil packs since I've already gone through 3 of them. Add that I also give my truck a regular sea foam treatment via a particular vacuum line, the engine cover just got in the way too much. So yeah, I left it off.
 
Once again, for me its just one less thing to remove. Like @Muddy Bean mentioned you have a coil pack that goes out, you can change it in 5 minutes on the side of the highway (depending which one). With the engine cover on, it just adds to that time. After several times removing it, I just asked myself why I kept putting it back on. No difference in sound with it on or off for me. I believe it is clearly for aesthetics.
 
I believe it's 4, 10mm nuts to remove that cover. I dont think anyone is really saving any time as far as coil replacement goes. If they are...they gotta work on their wrenching. If you prefer the look of no cover, remove it, otherwise leave it on. It's an aesthetic trim peice that may add a slight amount of noise reduction.
 
Not trying to be a dick. I fully support the idea of leaving it off due to laziness. But I don't think it makes much difference either way. Just your preference.

Would you mind elaborating on this "vacuum line sea foam treatment"? I am yet to give my rig a sea foam treatment and after finding a full bottle in my workshop recently I want to do that the next time I get the chance. I know the usual method is to spray it directly into the throttle body but I've never heard of this vacuum line method.

Everyones input matters, don't feel bad for throwing it out there. Laziness is half of it, the other half is me thinking "every bolt takes time", 4 bolts/nuts adds up to extra time that I don't personally feel necessary.

I admit I have a likely unhealthy relationship with my cruisers, but even I don't open up the hood to wistfully gaze upon their stunning aesthetics. If I'm opening up the hood, it's because I'm filling something, checking something, fixing something, planning something, measuring something, installing something, cleaning something, or changing something. It just gets in the way. Function over form, and the engine cover provides no discernable function,as evidenced by the fact that I don't miss it at all when it's sitting on the shelf, waiting for reinstallation at a future date for resale...

Fair enough. I've thought of leaving it off for the same reason. But I like clean look so left it on.
 
A better question is: "Why is it there in the first place?"

What functional purpose does it serve? I'll gladly add a ton of useful gizmos, but I took off my engine cover because it was not serving a purpose. It is 100% unnecessary.

95% unnecessary. It serves an asthetic purpose. Almost every modern engine has some kind of cover on it now. Some have sound insulation and some are just for looks

Correct. Since there's no sound damping on our engine cover then it's relegated to the same category as pin striping and the V8 badge.
 
Mine serves one purpose: It has the date/mileage of the last timing belt change. But reading this thread makes me tempted to yank it... I'm getting a rattle when stopped in Drive that I thought was a skid plate but perhaps is the cover... gotta find out.
 
Mines off.
I pretend it helps the gas mileage by saving 4 lbs.
And it just looks cooler.
 
Since I work on and regularly inspect my own truck I don't need extra crap in my way when I need to get at something... let the dealer techs curse that crap if you like.
 
Took mine off - it rattled when the weather was cool and I prefer seeing the motor when I open the hood.
