Does anyone know if the early style inspection lamp socket is still available? It's the one that mounts on the firewall instead of in the glove box.

I have found the newer style, but can't find any references or part numbers for these early ones.

Anybody?

Well crap...

So should I retrofit the newer style or scour the internet in hopes someone has one in decent condition?

Try a want ad in the classifieds. I think @pardion may have one or two left.

@65swb45 isn’t that a later style socket?

Matt, AFAIK, there are two basic types of sockets: ones with threaded terminals, and ones with spade terminals. Beyond that, there MAY have been an additional distinction in shape. I’d have to dig out my binbox to check.

BTW, thanks for sending me something uber-cool to put in it! I hope to try it out soon, but I’m a little preoccupied at the moment. The taillight harness on my 45 melted down last night. Instant 30 amp draw on the alternator. Spent 10 minutes trying to separate the plug that had 54 years to fuse together, then drove home sans taillights.

Looks to me like FJC Mtneer's plug faces the engine, and bb67tlc's faces the passenger seat.. :hmm:
You'd think the inspection light would be more useful in the engine compartment than in the cab. And the cord isn't long enough to reach from one to the other.

So whose plugs are using the factory wiring, engine compartment or cab?

Mine was inside the cab, with the wire running through the big grommet and down to the socket. That's how it is described in the early owner's manual as well.

But since the socket mounts just below the grommet in the firewall, it could easily be reversed as the wire could either run through the grommet or not as needed.

I bought a ‘64 for parts back in 1992 to harvest for my SWB restoration. It always intrigued me that it had a second inspection socket on the radiator core support. Very practical.

Hello,

Later model sockets show up every once in a while on eBay.

This thread reminded me of Grandpa's 40. I always found it odd that newer 40 Series had a socket in the glove box instead of the firewall.

So should I put you in the que for a new rear chassis harness? :grinpimp:

I've got one of the later style that I can't use. The holes are totally incompatible with the early ones.
