Hey this is my first post and am new to the 4x4 world, so forgive me if this topic has been beaten to death. I am looking into the e-locker swap from a 3rd gen 4Runner into my 2nd gen. Now all the info I have found most people state you have to get the ecu for the 3rd member and the factory wiring harness to make it work properly. Why can you not just wire up a switch and relay to it and activate/deactivate whenever you want? Whats the need for the ecu? Isnt the ecu just setting/monitoring parameters such as not allowing lock up if over a certain mph or if you are in 2H/4H? Does the ecu possibly act as a form of "traction control" and look for wheel slip then activate lock up only when needed? I would love to just wire up a switch and relay and call it a day, I hate computers. For me simple and as mechanical as possible is always the best combination. Thanks in advance for any input!

Also I have heard rumor about a cable locker that was only an option on Toyotas in Australia? Is this true? Any aftermarket companies making these for the 8" diffs?

There are some diy threads on wiring these up between here and a competitor yota board.

Low range off road offers a stand alone harness, no ECU needed (or wanted) for about 275 if you're not great with wiring.

I've seen some cable conversation kits in the past but they are not cheap. The LCE kit runs just shy of 600 bucks.

The first few pages cover the wiring pretty good.

This is also a solid way to wire it up.

The wiring harness is the main issue here, 12voltguy had a nice switch panel kit which I regret not buying when he was still around a lot of folks like his work, but he seems to have vanished for no reason. ORS makes a nice harness too for a few bucks more if you want it done right.

Thank You! Thats just what I needed.

Very nice but seems spendy. Im not shy of doing some wiring as long as I can get my hands on a schematic.

this is pretty gravy either way. the "ecu" "is really nothing but a couple of relays.
the harness or at least the plug ends should be pretty easy to score at a yard. afaik still available through Toyota too.
these are all the same from 96 and up, through at least 2nd gen taco, 4th gen 4runner and fjc as well.
there zero chance im paying even 275$ for someone else's bits.
its like an hour or so to build a harness from scratch.

Ya, I've seen the same. Relays, computer, it's all BS. You just need a DPDT switch. I've wired two that way, no issues.
