I bought the full SOR exhaust kit this time. Easy button.

Added O2.

Now I’m installing the fuel system.

What is the capped off port on water pump used for ?
The water pump and thermostat were done by another shop. That’s one made for an oil cooler. Common to just cap them like that.

If it was me I'd reposition the exhaust clamps on the headers for more ground clearance, just in case. Loosen and rotate the front one so the bolt is vertical on the passenger side and disassemble the rear one and reassemble it so the bolt is vertical on the frame side. The tightening nuts are easily accessible from the bottom. That is just me.

Coolant added. Checking for leaks on washer bottle. Seems good.

Added the upper fuel line.

New visors

New mirrors

Someone from @cruiseroutfit must intern at the place that makes the visors. There is no way to remove these rubber bands without cutting

New OEM wipers

Added the Live Wires

This thing is a battery and about an hour in wiring from firing up.

This is probably the most common fj40 pedal design.

The arm is bent down through the firewall and the linkage attaches. Here is how to make this sniper/Lokar cable ready

Bend the arm up straight ish. You will have to work it a bit around the firewall bracket.

Chop off the end

Grind the round bar flat so you can easily drill a 1/8” hole into it

This is how it will look

For the fuel system have you always done the external fuel pump on 40s? I saw on Mosley’s website they offer both in tank and external. I’m curious if you’ve had experience with both or just external? If both what’s your opinion on the two?
I had a bad taste in my mouth on external pumps from back in my rock buggy days so
Initially I was doing in tank pumps.

Then I hated how loud they were in a 40 and went with external pumps.

To date I’ve not had a single customer have an external pump failure. I have 30-40 out there. The one Mosley sells is dead quiet. Reliable.

Great, thank you. That was the information I was looking for.

Well I got it wired up and it fired right up. Unfortunately it reved directly to redline so I shut it off.

Tried it again and it backfired actual fire out of the bottom of the intake manifold.

Looks like I have a busted intake.

It had been repaired in the past and came off this running vehicle. I can only think having it sand blasted opened up the welded crack.

Luckily I have another one but it’s got a different PCV intake. Luckily again I found one and a desmog kit plug for it. It’s getting painted now and I’ll start the build back

Sounds perfect. But I can’t get the IAC to read and the idle is up at 1100. Zero vacuum leaks around the sniper with carb cleaner and my vacuum gauge is steady but reading pretty low at 15

Usually elevated idle is due to a vacuum leak. Also the 15 is a bit low. I think I still have a vacuum leak somewhere

Timing is at 12.

I quit for the day. Gonna smoke it tomorrow and see if I can find a leak.

Spent an hour pulling the old advertisement off the doors then fired up the smoke machine. It’s pouring out the back of the intake. I attempted to reuse the Remflex. It looked good but no seal on the second use.
IMG_0194.webp

I hope I can get the exhaust off far enough without having to unplug the entire exhaust.

Digging in now.

Alright. Turns out it was not the Remflex it was the intake hitting the headers. That’s what was wrong with the other intake I took off as well.

Son of a bitch.

All I had to do was grind a little off the intake aluminum and I’m back in business.

Lined it up top dead center on the intake stroke and stabbed the distributor.

I always add some grease under the collar gasket so when it seats correctly you will see the grease exit. This thing runs the oil pump and if it’s not fully seated you will have a dead 2F in a few minutes

Set the valves. They were pretty close but loose

New clutch master. The tube end was flared out so I had to add a new one.

Added a TEQ Matt water pipe and the sniper sensor into the block.

Nolan, have you ever had issues with the sniper reading temps down in the block? I ask because my 60 tended to read hotter down in the block than up on the head where the factory sensor is. It actually caused running issues to the point of shutting down momentarily.
