glow plugs on the way.

I am sitting on a plane between Jacksonville and Portland, and read this thread from start to finish...AMAZING stuff. I pick up my 81 BJ40 next weekend, and this thread will be my guide. I'll be taking a different tack than Dallas in that i am not going to do a full on OEM resto, but i feel SO much better and have sucha greater understanding if what it's going to take now that I've read this. My anxiety level has gone way down.

GREAT work Dallas..keep it up.

Hi dallas,

The starter/ignition switch is in the mail. Just regular air mail to keep the costs low. Should be there at the end of next week.

While waiting and SEARCHING for parts, I decided to weld up all of the rust issues.

Working the quarter panels (yes, i seal the entire piece of steel in - I just weld a little at a time to avoid warping)

WORD TO THE WISE - I did something STUPID! While cutting some steel to weld into the body, I slipped and hacked off the end of my finger.

Luckily its healing up nicely. Here is the crime scene:

Wow you are a bleeder! Glad to hear it's healing up allright. Look like no brake cleaner work for that hand for a few days!

Jinkees Dallas, hope everything is o-k with your finger?

Finally finished reading all the updates on this. I have learned more about Toyota diesels than I ever thought I would know thanks to this thread!

Because of the help of the forum members in sourcing parts, I was able to find a 40 series top cover yay!!!

Oh, and take a look at this....I noticed some wire splicing and mis-matched screws holding the blower motor on. I can't help but think this is a 12V swapped out version. Thoughts?

You sure a makeing good progress on the BJ. Even from when I was just there visiting.....My only advice is to keep your fingers away from grinders and watch out for dead trees : ) Hope you can come at the end of the month.

Time for some wiring questions as they relate to the 81 wiring diagram.

First - there are two blue with red stripes (LR) wires on the left (driver) side of the rig. One with a green plug - the other nothing. The ONLY thing I can see LR wires for on the diagram is A/C, and this was never an AC rig.

P1000468.jpg

These are the other wires on the driver side, that must hook into the battery or? I'll have to see how these relate to the diagram.

Any idea what this plug may be for, next to the horn on the driver side.

I just need to figure out how the VR/Alternator/etc.. plug into this harness.

I am knee deep in wiring hell. I am trying to make notes on the wiring diagram.

All I can say about your heater fan is that it is quite different to mine Dallas.

But those wire joins make me suspicious too that your PO may have accomplished another dirty deed.

LR is used for:
  • the feed from "accessory position" on your ignition
  • the feed to the in-cab unit (blower) for the AC
  • the feed to the heater blower speed control switch
  • electric winch control wiring
  • windshield wiper motor feed
  • the feed to the radio
So take your pick. (I can't place exactly where your photo is taken.)

:hhmm:
The fat WL is probably the battery charge wire (from the alternator/regulator).

The fat BR is probably the wire to your starter relay and/or glow plug relay.

The other 2 smaller-gauge WL wires maybe ammeter fuses? Do you have any ammeter fuses there Dallas? (There should be two 5A fuses in a little box not too far from the 24V +Ve terminal of your battery-pair.) One fuse should sit between two small-gauge WL wires while the other should sit between two small-gauge B wires. (Trouble is .... I only see one black one in your photo instead of two.)

By the way .... I just had a thought ... Do you have any fusible links there ... because those are usually the first things for PO's to butcher/remove????

...Any idea what this plug may be for, next to the horn on the driver side....

You say THE horn Dallas but there should be two of them.

So if THE horn you have has the same connector with the same colour-coded wires, then that connector is for your missing second horn.

...Wires hanging hear right side of motor:....

one YB - oil pressure sender
other YB - oil pressure switch
YG - water temperature sender

...More hanging near right side of motor:...

Those are all for your alternator Dallas

...Alternator ....

My guess is that your green plug connects as follows:
Green to WG
Black to WB
Blue to WL (the thinner WL)

And I think the big thick WL wire goes to that separate terminal on your alternator (with the nut on it).

...Voltage Regulator:....

How many wires in that VR plug Dallas? Are there 6?

If so, they should mate with the following nearby in the loom:
two WL wires (or one WL and one W)
a WG wire
a WB wire
a Y wire (or a GR wire)
a BY wire

Wish I was you right now. That looks like fun! :D

Umph!!! I think you are 100% correct on the heater blower. THE PREVIOUS OWNER IS A CRIMINAL!

The two LR wires I have in the first picture are on the DRIVER side. One has a green plug, the other is just cut. I don't have A/C (at least I don't think it did).
It could be the feed to the heater blower speed control switch?
I am not sure but don't think it had an electric winch.
The wiper motor is on the other side of the truck, but could be.
Radio? hmmm.

If this had A/C and an electric winch the PO is even more criminal. I am headed out to spend the day with this cruiser.

THANK YOU for the wiring help. HUGE help.
