winter schminter. get a fat bike 🤣 jk

i went for my first ride today actually. we had two feet of snow in three days then it went to -30 then i had a couple terrible weeks of work where i wasn’t home till 10:00 at night then last weekend we had a thaw followed by an ice storm. so today was really the first day i felt i could ride outside. it felt sooooo good to be on a bike again. it’s been too long!! my wife came too which was a nice bonus! Sorry, NFW. 😁

Remembered to pack the winter gear✅
Full on sunny but frigid day✅
Another quick ride but forgot to shut off the recording✅
Just squeezed out enough sunlight✅
Oh yeah, most important, no spinning in the basement here!

Stay safe out there; this happened to the local club today (and I know some who will have been riding - but at the moment know nothing).

It's happened on the road one over from mine, and I heard all the sirens and the helicopters heading out (and back).

Update on earlier, from the message group and Strava, I've worked out that 4 people I know well are safe (OK is going to be subjective) 2 were away and not racing, 1 was riding elsewhere and one cut her race short at the 12km mark (the accident was at about the 26km mark, so on the return from the 15km turn).

The race field would normally be around the 15-20 riders.

Update from news coverage:

I think we know who it is, but not officially released. Updates on the others including:
  • 4 broken ribs, 4 fractures in pelvis, compound/open fracture to hand,
  • Broken right arm, broken bones in hand, broken femur (rod going in), broken bone in spine (not central bone) in a side bone, broken pelvis
  • Stitches in elbow, bark off a few places, can't put weight on one leg
No idea on the cause or the driver, but I think it will all come out in the wash.

Wow. Super sorry @Paddler Ed

This is pretty intense I’m sure for you and your cycling community.

Much love from 7000 miles away.
It's a small community here (24,000), so as the mayor says the 2 degrees of separation is very much real. I spoke to one person today and he knew one of them, and the another person knew a few (and neither of them were riders). Had a lot of messages from friends checking in on me (and others have had the same).

It's going to be hard for the racing community because it was the A- and B- grade riders who were hit. It was a handicap race so they were on their return, and one of the first on the scene was an aspiring 18 year old who has been riding in Europe this year (as it was handicap he was on the chase).

I just needed somewhere to sound off, so I've been posting here and on another forum's cycling thread - the best thing is the time difference as you guys will be awake during my night...

So sorry to hear & read about this @Paddler Ed...
Terrible news, I'm not particularly religious but am sending positive thoughts, vibes, and hugs in your direction. I also live in a smallish community and can relate to the 2 degrees of separation you mentioned. Kind regards
Rob

Terribly sorry about the tragedy amongst your friends, @Paddler Ed Hopefully those injured make full recoveries, and sending all the strength and peace I can to the friends and family of the deceased.

On another note, still haven't ridden since just prior to Thanksgiving, but have a followup dr appt Monday. Hopefully she clears me to resume riding. The ebike will be a nice transition back in...
