Thanks to all who’v posted Info here.

I’m getting ready to put the dash back together on our Feb 79 USA FJ40. I did not dismantle.

My plan is to put the knobs and such in first, that way I have an idea of where and how to run wiring. This thread will really help with location of knobs.

Advice appreciated in solving this puzzle. It is labeled with letters that have no reference.

Maybe this will help?

Hmmm... ya maybe lol. Much appreciated!

I have a 7/'79 Fj40 and it does not have the upper dash light or a cut out for it. Was that an option? I've seen them on trucks before and after mine. Wondering if maybe I don't have a stock dash and it got eliminated? Any ideas or tips? I do have the light that it is in the footwell above the heater.

I'm betting you have a replacement dash pad. I had a 10/77 and it had both lights. Actually working too.

My 12/79 40 does not have one either. Dash pad looks stock, but I have not owned it since new so I don't know for sure.

Interesting, anyone else with a late year '79 or newer (north american) have a light? I thought I saw one on the 1980 dash posted earlier in this thread. I haven't owned mine since new, but always assumed my dash was stock. Looking at the SOR thread on Dash Pads, it looks like the OEM ($500) has a cutout, but the $118 "Dash Cover" does not. It looks like installing this dash cover involves adhesive, so I can't easily remove to check without destroying it. If someone else can confirm that these vehicles should have it, I may get a little adventurous with an exacto knife to see if I can find something.

I have two '79's that have the light - one march one feb of 79

Thanks. Looks like the knives will come out. I'll try to just feel first, but if not, can someone let me know if it's centered, and if so how wide it is. I'd like to trace out, or at least find a good edge before I start to cut too much. I may see about removing the dash all together and going at it from behind.

3.5 inch wide, centered over the hazard switch

yes, PO installed some non-OEM LEDs in there

exactly what I needed to see @erics . Honestly, I think this is the best photo of the position of this light on the entire site. Good lord I've been looking. I'll let everyone know what I find in the next day or two.

Feb 79. The light reads RH 12V. 100% OEM

Feb 79’ rig. Can someone tell me if this fuse box will work, the configuration is different. Also, what hole does this relay get attached to? There is not another like it and I think it will help me line up all the plugs.

Hey guys, I will buy a 1984 BJ42. Sadly it has the newer dash

I would prefer to have the older dash.

Now I found an old dash for 150 bucks on Ebay, it is from a 1972 FJ40

Do you think I could put that dash straight into my BJ42?

And could I swap in the square brakelights like in this dash?

Has anyone done that? I dont want to buy that dash just to find out that my plans dont work.

certainly possible but seems like a lot of work, there are spot welds across the top edge, welded on each side, the glove box is spot welded to the dash,

some guys like the newer dash as it was only for the last 2 years of production

why? I would rethink this one littleafrica. Not advised to chop up a nice OEM dash of all things. If you want the older look, wait for an older model. Seems like you have a classic already though...
