We're planning our first trip :)

I know Dan really wanted a cross-brake lid for the trailer... My buddy has a 10' x 150ton brake but the tooling was really too big to cross brake sheet crisply (well to my liking anyway)... I called every connection I had within 100 miles and no one had the tight die and punch I wanted.

SO............. I bought/resourced several pieces of angle iron to shim(build up) and tighten his press brake V-die. Had the piece of 16ga delivered and ..........I think it turned out GREAT!

I hope you like it Dan!

I'm waiting on a capacitor board for my welding machine. I blew one up on my Miller yesterday morning. Parts were supposed to be over-nighted from Boise but, as of 11am they are a no show...

No worries... this gives me tube bending time on the shelf/wheel wells and other things around the shop that need to be worked on..

Have a great weekend guys,

Jason

Right on J! Thank you for your dogged determination!!!

I built a trailer years ago and put a lid with a cross brake on it, very sturdy. Good idea guys!

Very fun, will enjoy following along with this one.

Nice job on the build! Looks really nice. Interesting design for the lid. I am about to start my lid and tailgate this week.

More progress......

Epoxy painted the springs and axle.

New axle is installed, 100 wheels and tires, all jacks, marker and tail lights. The LED lights are sealed and 10-30V so they will work on a 24V rig without blowing as well.

Tomorrow I plan to cut all the sheet, tack it up, get the hinges and latches situated. I hope to get this painted early next week.

Few pics/posts

It all looks so nice that I plan to rob most of your ideas. Honestly, I started creating a design and then found the Trailer Talk thread and had some of my ideas vindicated. I like your build a lot. You said you were going to use 16 gauge for the outside. Are you going to cross break it or you going to put anything on the inside for support, like ply wood? Also, how are you going to fasten, weld, screws, tape?

My idea was to run some sort of seal on the skeleton and bolt the skin on with nutserts and stainless bolts. The fasteners will break up the long panels a bit and I really want it sealed and i cant stand rattle noises. I also wanted ply wood on the inside for a "warmer" feeling for the cargo. Plus it will be my dog house when i piss the misses off on the trip.

Keep up the good work.

Thanks,

All sheeting will be 100% welded on the exterior and intermittent chain welded on the interior (no rattles). Tape fails and leaks happen, usually sooner than later. It takes a while to weld out, but I know my client will be SAFE for YEARS against the elements. Side panels, tailgate and nose box are all flat steel. No need to cross brake short or narrow sections, they will be rigid enough as is, aesthetics is another monster all in its own...

Feel free to copy whatever you wish and feel free to PM me or post here with questions.

Jack rack is welded up. Nose box, top and DS panel is in sheet and tacked up. Tube is bent for the side tables and fenders.

Didn't get as far as I wanted to today, the back is still pretty tender and I worked at half speed today, IMO. Hope to finish all the sheet tomorrow.

All the sheet in tacked up, fender/tables are complete, handles on.

Dan, if you are good with everything I will be under the hood for the next 2-3 days. FYI, I'm ecstatic how the shackle angle turned out on the empty load weight.

Custom length shocks for suspension and gas struts for the lid will be here tomorrow.
