Time for a small update. I have remade my suction side AC hose using a longer run or thin wall AC hose.
Since this hose runs over the exhaust manifold I chose to cover the hose with a protective material from McMaster-Carr.

The "reduced barrier" hose I sourced from cold hose and is very affordable. It is much easier to bend, you do have to get a special crimping die for the tool I mentioned previously.

I also switch to a 90 degree fitting at the firewall to help increase the length of the hose path and give a nice sweeping bend.

Wow this is a great tread , I just noticed that you are in the DFW area , maybe we should have a beer someday after this pandemic passes . I have been thinking about the Cummins swap but would really like to get some first hand experience before comiting to one.

Keep up the good work.

Joe

Yes, just north of DFW airport. Which Cummins swap are you looking into and into which chassis? What part of the metroplex are you located in?

I am far North of Dallas between Mckinney and Sherman, got a LJ73 here that will get a new powerplant next winter , if I would do a cummins it has to be a new crate 2.8 , I think there is already an adapter for the R150/151 trans so that makes it even easier. I have been around 1HZ’s and 1HDT’s all my life so seeing on paper the numbers similar to a 1HDT is great but experience learned me that numbers are not alwaysthe same as real life feeling.

I'm in the DFW area too and would love to be able to check out your awesome diesel rig, waiting to finish college before doing a diesel swap, have been leaning towards fte or 1hz but wanting to see what else is out there!

After college, I am thinking of swapping in a 1hz with 5speed or fte with automatic. Which would you recommend?

First things first get rid of the automatic . There are still several 1HZ’s around but finding a Ft is getting pretty hard these days. It all depends what cruiser your donor is and what your expected use is. I would never do this swap in a 80 as it is easier for me just to buy a hdj80.

The donor will be my 94' 80, 1hz will probably be my go-to and ill slap on a reliable turbo, trying to find out the best tranny I should use, been hearing a lot about R151. I'm wanting to keep the all-wheel drive, which as far as I can tell will stay with the next transmission. Also since the 1hz is basically all mechanical, is there a way to have cruiser control? (non-locking idle method)

Go through my entire build thread. This is covered, essentially the solution is to run the cable and CC actuator from an FJ80. From the actuator you have a single cable that goes over to the bellcrank in the injection pump.

IHZ isn't meant to take a turbo but obviously people do it anyway. Something about weak wristpins or con rods or some such thing. Anyway, I'd hold out for a FT (not FTE) engine then tweak the fueling for more output. Cruise control should still work the same as a 1FZ-FE engine, no? Same speedo feedback but not sure if the CC talks only to the TCU or to the ECU on a petrol engine though.....

Will do, thank you!

Awesome, I'll do some research!

@PurpleFJ62 Sorry if this info has been covered already, but what are your final hp/torque output to the flywheel or to the tires? Did you dyno it?

No dyno has been done yet. I would like to get the higher torque tune from Cummins installed, that will give it 161hp and 310 ft-lbs.

What are the numbers now?

latest updates? hows it running.

see commercial H150 adapter available now. as soon as I get back to my 80, will convert from a442 to H151 and prep to send back to US.

A few updates to report and one question I very much need answered.

First, could someone please look at the picture below and tell me which part interfaces with the 1HD/1HZ tach sensor? I need to figure out how many teeth are on the gear that works with the OEM sensor. I am in the process of designing a pulsar gear that will mount on the front of the R2.8 to drive a factory diesel tach.

Below is a picture that I found in a thread about wiring the tach in a FZJ to 1HD swap here on mud. I need to know the number of teeth on this gear thing.

As for updates. Finally had the balls to hook up my cruise control system, works perfectly! No reason it should not, it works just like the 1HD one does.

Have take the rig on some trips out of DFW, down to Waco and over to Weatherford. Typically drive 65-70 mpg, it seems happy at that speed. After 1000 miles getting about 21.5 mpg. Coolant temp runs about 180F. When the engine was brand new it ran much hotter. Currently only one of my fans is hooked up. The R2.8 harness has two trigger wires for two fans, either the second wire is inactive or it has not been needed yet. Even got in some traffic jams and it did not over heat, and yesterday (July 2nd) it was quite hot.

Here are a few renderings of what I have in mine for the pulsar gear. I will check the alignment one more time, this should be right about on the crank centerline. Sure wish Cummins would just release the ****ing CAD model, this would be so much easier.

Once someone chimes in telling me the number of teeth I will simply cut those out of the part, that will be it.

Hey I’m looking to do a 1hz or 1hd-t swap on my 80, I’m in the Dfw area, long shot but do you know anyone they would be willing to give me a look around their rig? Which would you recommend? I know we spoke above about the 1hd-t being a lot better, and I’m planning about matching that with a 5speed with overdrive regear.
