wow

Is there a reason you just didnt go with modified shortened Rockwells. With all of the lift you have and the engine tranny combo this would be a very bulletproof drivetrain and you wouldnt have to worry about the yokes getting in the way on top of the axles with all of the lift. It would also give you a very good driveshaft angle for less complications with all that power going to the tires. I saw a guy in the place where all of me and my buddies off road at with an 80 with the rockwell setup. He didnt have the motor tranny and other stuff you have but it had the Chevy 350 and nv4500 and ran the Mich. 53" tires and it was wicked as far as what it could do and it didnt look tipsy either with a lift very similar to what you have. He drove this rig to and from the park and he said it was like 45 minutes one way. I know personally you can get these axles custom done with disc brakes and shortened much cheaper than the portals and they are damn near impossible to break no matter what tire you run or terrain to wheel in. But i done have to say the portals to add the extra bit of a wow factor due to it being a very cool mod and a lot of people are running rockwells on their rigs now days.

Volvo or rockwells would probably have been cheeper also. One of the main reasons I am holding out for the Portal-Tek axles is the ability to use a 2.25 gear ratio. which give me a final ratio of about 4.5 or so. This will keep the rpms down, since the diesel will only rev to 4Krpm and I want to cruise at 2200rpm at around 75mph. I dont really need to go any faster than that after everything is done. 2 1/2ton rock wells would go along with my overkill plan... I just dont plan on trailering my rig. I built it to be driven.
I hope to beable to post some pictures up sometime this year, Of the axles. ... under my cruiser

Untill then I wait.

Just wanted to give an update on ronnie's set of Portal-Teks. I am in california right now doing a personal install on the set before him for cool cruiser fj40 and will be heading back to the shop as soon as i am finished to finish ronnies set. No i am not in mexico although it sounds like a good pit stop before going back to the same 20 hour a day welding and machining that i have been doing for the last 6 months. I am going to go home and crash hard for a few days since i havent slept in a few weeks and then we will arrange to do the same factory install in ronnies truck along with a few more surprises for everybody.

Now back to the shop.

Hello All. Yes good news indeed. Sorry it took so long to respond. Unfortuantally last week Someone ran a Red light and I lost my 03 Tacoma. So between dealing with the insurance, work and everything else in between, Including looking for a replacement truck, its been crazy buzy.
But I do look forward to having my ruck worked on next.

Depending on where it goes, will determin the picture progress that I will beable to post. If i ship it over to portal-tek, they will finish putting her back togeather again from the ground up. Either way. it will be one hell of a build.
Ill keep you all posted.

i wanna see the finished product.

depresing i rember first finding this thread a year ago and reading every post.

I am in the same boat. It's too bad that this is taking so long, but it will be sick when it's done!!

Frame Strengthening?

Sorry if this has been answered previously, but have you reinforced the frame around the motor mounts & inner frame rails? I have a 6BT from a '91 & a '93 W350 to reference for the wiring hookup ;p Not sure if I wanna try & chop/ bob & slice up an 80 or a 40. I'm thinkin the 80's frame will be much better constructed.

Could " better constructed " aren't the correct name .. definately the 80 frame are more resistance compared to 40 frame .. coz you are putting more engine power, more towing and cargo capacity.

Actually, it was in the second quarter of 1998 that Dodge moved to the computer controlled 24 valve engine! Not 1996.

does it run? wanna see!!!! please! :)

At this time, I have not reinforced anything yet. I was waiting on the axles before I did anything to alter the frame. I may have it braced if needed. Well see what happens. The only thing I am worred about is the frame twisting with all the extra power.

Currentaly she doesent run. I am waiting for the go ahead to have the vehicle towed to Portal-Teks shop to have all of the rest of the work done to it. This way everything can be done in one place. When?.....

I dont know...

When they tell me, Ill tell you.

If your keeping tabs, my Project has moved to Utah last week. Portal-Tek has taken her to finish up where I left off.

Oh, we're still watchin.

Bump, any updates? Has Portal-tek delivered?

Allrighty, Well, the Cruiser has been picked up, and delivered to Portal-Teks garage. I dont know everything, but I do know that its now being looked at.
By the time everything is about done... It should be done sometime next year.. maybe before next Christmas. It all depends on everything. Meaning, what all I want done to it.. and how many people it will go to.. and the avialibility of when thoes other people can see it. Unfortuantally, The more I talk to Rob, the more money I seem to spend.
So, There are lots off possibilities that can happen. It just depends on what all I want to do with the cruiser.
In other words, I have no idea of when anything is going to happen, Because everything depends on everything. So i am sending in my wish list. and well go from there.

Now then, If you as confuised as I am.., Hopefully you will at least see my truck floating around in the news stands sometime next year. :D
