Just got an adapter and flywheel! $600 for both in great condition. He drove a hard bargain. So, now I need the injection pump (may have a line on a P), the turbo, the intercooler, a starter, air, fuel and turbo plumbing...What else?

About 100 other things you will discover as you go along. At times I thought it would never end.

By the way Cullman, do you know where I can get a Hypnotoad, or is there just the one?

Check with Professor Farnsworth:D

Feel free to contact me any time. I will help any way I can:cheers:

I just noticed you said you had a line on a P pump. Changing to that pump is a big job, you will need the whole front cover assembly and the pump drive gear because that pump has a larger taper and a different bolt pattern than the VE or Delphi pumps. You will also have to pull the camshaft out of the engine to change the front cover assembly. It's not too bad of a job if you have done this kind of thing before but I wouldn't recommend it for a newbie.

No, my heart is not set on a P, but if I can get one for a good price, why not? Not worried about the mechanicing. Never done it before, but I had never done a ground up rebuild on a chasis before either, or swapped engines. It's just turning wrenches in the end. Half the fun is being able to say I did that. If I get stumped, I've got plenty of old timers here that can help me figure it out. No worries.

I've got a lead on a P is all. What I like about it, from the little I've read, is that it will get great diesel mileage as well as allowing me to get the horses and torque I want. Probably end up with a VE in the end, but it's nice to dream.

What is the normal OEM radiator cooling configuration for a 4bt that comes from one of the box van body trucks?

Fixed flex fan, clutch fan, electric fan?

Mine came out of a Ford chassis box van that originally had the 300 I6 engine. It had a big radiator, but a small cheap plastic fixed fan with no shroud about 6" away from the radiator. It's amazing it kept cool with that setup in the Alabama heat. These engines are amazingly easy to keep cool.

I've heard people say diesels like to stay warm. What temp does the 4bt like to run at? I guess I should think about getting something to cover the front of my radiator in the winter.

Got a lead on a used Bosch VE. Guy wants $800 for it, used, not rebuilt. He is supposed to send me a video...as soon as his kids show him how. Is that a reasonable price? He says he gets $800 to rebuild one. Does that sound right? What do you think Cullman? Can I get the Bosch and a turbo and make 400 ft/lbs of torque?

This is my concern: If i buy it for $800 and I then have to rebuild it for $800, that's $1600 for an injection pump. Not good.

Thoughts?

That is a pretty standard price for an injection pump. New you can spend easily 2x that amount.

I am not familiar with the Cummins motors but in general a diesel costs much more money to do work to.

If it's from an engine that was running well and it's not leaking anywhere I wouldn't bother rebuilding it. $800 is about right for a rebuild if you decide to do that. 400ft/lbs shouldn't be hard to do with the right pump tweaks, injectors, and turbo.

Our shop in Knoxville has a 0-460-424-069 pump core that is rebuildable and might be able to make you a decent deal. I will PM you the contact information if you're interested.

Thanks

Hey guys, thanks. To all of you, particularly Cullman for helping to identify the injection pump that is on my engine now, and educating me about what I need. I just scored this pump off of craigs list for $900. It just came back from South Central Diesel (Remember this name as a good source for diesel parts) in Nebraska, where they tested it to make sure it runs perfect. I know...I know, I need a new gear housing...and timing gear.

Shop around. When I was researching KDP stuff there were several options for the case and such Iwould think a 6bt with a p-pump would be the same... maybe?

Kief, KDP?

Phonician, I keep looking at your engine to see what this pump should look like mounted. And to start identifying what parts are needed.

Next...A turbocharger. This seems to be the opposite problem from Injection pumps: You cant swing a dead cat without hitting a turbo that someone claims will work with a 4bt. Over to 4btswaps to comb through the archives to start the education.

Page 3, post #45 by boots is very helpful in locating the service manual for the 4bt. It's no lite read at 588 pages, but it has the info you need. I haven't addressed the KDP in it yet, but when i replace the timing gear housing, I will.

I just talked to the guy who sold me the pump and he said the timing gear housing out of any '94 to '98 Dodge will work. Nice to know. One should not be hard to find...Hopefully.

Okay, back to the manual.
