I don't see the diaphram that usually on the top of them that adjusts fueling according to boost.

I don't know if you could buy that and swap it on, you might be able to, but I'm not sure what that would cost. You might just want to look for a VE pump off of a truck. I would start searching the classifieds over at some diesel forums and craigslist.

Thanks Stevo. I was grasping at straws because i've been combing the classifieds and there has been NOTHING so far.

Here is a list of VE pumps that can be used:

Bosch # 0 460 424 022
0 460 424 061

Cummins # 3908185
3907964
3908187
3915763
3915143

List of governor springs (Bosch Numbers)

2800 RPM 1-464-650-386
3200 RPM 1-464-650-366
3800 RPM 1-464-650-374
4200 RPM 1-464-650-354

You will need new injector lines also, and new nozzles. Tweaking these pumps for more HP/Torque is easy but be careful about getting exhaust temps (EGT) too high or you can start burning holes in pistons. There is lots of good info on how to tweak for more power on 4BTswaps.com and also on 1stgen.org. 1stgen.org is geared to the first generation 6BT's with VE pumps used in Dodge trucks, but the info is also mostly valid for 4BT's.

Here's a picture of mine. This was made before it was completed and I was still making sure everything fit and worked. I didn't have the AC hoses made yet, or the intake plumbed up or the exhaust completed. I will try to post a few more pics later.

I would start at 4BTswaps and put a wanted ad in their classifieds section looking for a VE pump. You can also try contacting some of the vendors that frequent that site like Tennessee Diesel Conversions. That guy usually has some used parts or engines for sale.

Good find Phoenician. 4BT's with that pump are the shizzle!

keeping my fingers crossed that it's good to go. I bought it while overseas and managed to turn it when I came home for RnR, so I know it's not seized. I haven't seen it run yet, so until then I'm not gonna breathe easy. But yeah the pump is the reason I bought it while overseas.

Thanks Dave. Already have the add in at 4btswaps. I'll chek out the link.

Cullman - Looks awsome. Need to update the hat. And, wow, thanks for the numbers. It must have been some work. I appreciate it and owe you a beer when you travel through Jackson...as well as some BBQ ribs.

Phoenician: What injection pump is that?

Well boys, the pictures have got me going. Why is everything taking so long? LOL!

Wyoming, the pictures and dreaming of owning a diesel helps me through the day here. It sucks though cause I get to drive the 2011 land cruisers with the D4D diesel engines and b6 armor. However I prefer the old school body styles to the new ones. As for your pump question I'm totally drawing a blank, I believe it's called the P pump or P7100. Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Cullman,
Can I mount a P7100 to this motor? If so, what should I pay for one used? check this number out, will it work?

Oops! That's not big enough.

Yes, that's the P pump. It's the one to have if you want to make insane amounts of power. It is also more durable than the VE rotary pump and should last as long as the engine does. You can put that pump on any 4BT but you will have to get a new front cover assembly and drive gear, much $$$.
All that being said, the VE pump will be more than adequate for 95% of people.

I sometimes see these on Ebay priced like they're made of cast gold. The VE will be fine for you unless you're trying to make 600Hp. The P pumps do have one disadvantage to the VE in that they have no timing advance, so driveability is a little better with a VE.

One day soon hopefully, I'm gonna put this engine, in this Cruiser. I just need to get my hands on an AC bracket.

I've seen you motor at Edwin's shop. Looks pretty good. Did you get a new bell housing for it? I think that's an SAE one on there.

Interesting. If I read this right and it makes sense because a diesel doesn't have a distributer, a diesel's timing is advanced by the fuel pump. I'm thinking the fuel is injected earlier to advance the timing, no?

Bingo, timing is advanced by the pump. Distributor style pumps like the VE have a hydraulic piston that rotates the cam ring to advance the timing for cold starts and higher RPM. Inline pumps like the P pump do not have that.
On newer diesels with common rail electronic injection the timing is computer controlled. They also do pre-injection and multi shot injection to reduce noise and emissions. Cool stuff, and they make great power, but they are more complicated and not as bullet proof and anvil simple as the old style mechanical fuel injection like we're using.

I got the bell housing, the adapter, the nv4500 transmission, the intercooler, just missing the clutch and flywheel right now. Just annoyed that it's taking so long to get started, but then again it's not like I can drive it while I'm out here.

Just got an adapter and flywheel! $600 for both in great condition. He drove a hard bargain. So, now I need the injection pump (may have a line on a P), the turbo, the intercooler, a starter, air, fuel and turbo plumbing...What else?

By the way Cullman, do you know where I can get a Hypnotoad, or is there just the one?
