1. Prevention
The root cause of this problem is the door limiter, or door "check" according to Toyota. 68630-60051 and 68640-60050 are the rear door check assemblies for the 1998-2002 Land Cruiser and LX470. The design was changed for the 2003+ model years reducing the ramp angle of the check (less force required to close the door). I have a "door limiter upgrade kit" in the works- just waiting for some parts to arrive from Japan.
First noticeable symptoms include small cracks forming in the door sheet metal around the 2x 10mm nuts often accompanied by loud creaking noises when opening and closing the rear doors.
DO NOT WAIT- once the cracking starts it only takes a few times before the sheet metal gives way completely!

As one closes the door, pressure is applied by the 10mm nut flanges onto the thin metal. Stress fractures begin to form, then expand rapidly. The reinforcement plates are sandwiched between the door and the nuts. This effectively adds surface area to the flanged nuts which increases the area of force being applied to the sheet metal door frame.

Installation of the plates is extremely straight forward:
- Remove 2x 10mm nuts (on door)
- Remove 1x 10mm bolt (in vehicle body)
- Slide reinforcement plate over the limiter into place
- Replace 10mm nuts (44 in-lbs.)
- Replace 10mm bolt (20 ft-lbs.)
2. Repair
After the doors have completely cracked through there's little-to-no right way to fix them other than taking the vehicle to a body shop or welding the door back together. I created the bare metal version of these plates so that DIYers can attempt to repair the doors without having to measure and cut new pieces of sheet metal. These are made of the same 4130 chromoly steel as the powder coated version.

Other notes and threads:
I do also sell "
Scratch & Dent" plates which have failed my QC inspection (either poor packing from the manufacturer or flaws in the powder coat). A quick rattle-can will give these a second chance at life.
