Things are going ok so far. She describes it as like having the flu at the moment. Low grade fever, a cough when she is up and about, a headache, body aches. We video chat every few hours, and I take things in to her as carefully as I can - sporting a mask and a shirt reserved for just going into her room. We don't use this time for talking...

She just took a long hot shower and ended up very short of breath. She managed to call to me and I ran up, opened the bathroom window to clear out the steam and got her inhaler to her. She was ok after a minute or so. This was our first sort of scary moment that we will need a little time to process.... In a panic I ran up without a mask on...

She is eating and drinking fine - even had two cups of coffee this morning.

So far the kids and I are feeling fine. I can't help but exaggerate every little ache and pain - I keep thinking, what was that? am I getting it now???

Sterilizing is a big concern. So many questions that I didn't and don't have answers to:
  • Does normal laundry process kill the virus on clothes?
    - Use as hot of water as possible, detergent kills it too. Should be safe to mix with non-infected clothes (but i'm not....)

  • Does dishwasher the virus kill on dishes?
    - Best I can find is that they do because of the hot water used. I have also been using the "sanitize" setting on our dishwasher.

  • Do disinfecting wipes kill it?
    - It says on the side of the container that it kills H1N1 and flu virus, no clue otherwise.... Some articles lead me to believe it will not kill it. I still don't know what I am supposed to be wiping things down with.

  • How do you take a drink to a patient without using a million cups a day and without infecting your kitchen?
    - Still working on this one

  • Will virus travel through HVAC?
    - I don't know. Kids are in the basement where there are no vents. Thankfully the past few days have been nice and we have had the windows open

  • Lock up the pets
They can't get it, but they can spread it through contact!
Thank you all for your well-wishes and prayers! We are down, but we are not out!!

Soap any soap made from fat, so dish washing soap as well... will break down lipids that hold the virus together. Just remember, scrub for at least 20 seconds, lots of friction.

Quick google search and found this article, but there are plenty more articles.

Andy,

Though it is a bit of a waste, an option for drinks is water bottles (disposable),
If she isn't drinking the water, empty the good water into a pitcher before pouring what ever drink she desires into the bottle.
Then having a separate trashcan for those bottles.
Just a thought that the roommates and I discuessed.

Good thought - need to get me some of those! We generally use filtered water from our RO system.

Today NJ. Gov. Murphy just made it mandatory for customers going to supermarkets to wear a face covering. 50% capacity in stores only.

I’m just getting caught up here, Jeeze Andy, I don’t pray very often, but I’m praying for your family now.

Hi Andy,

Is your wife still going to work? If so it might be time to reconsider.

Do you use plastic disposable cups, like the kind you can get from Giant? You put each family member's name on their individual cup with no sharesies (not sure that's a word). Then the cup can be re-used by that person without concern for disease transmission.

Thinking of you and your family Andy hoping she doesn’t have this crap

Let us know if you need anything I’ll ship it to you if need be

No Vince, she is not even coming out of our bedroom.

Burl, she has it for sure. As I was typing an answer to you, we got the test results. Positive....

At the moment, she has all of the signs of a bad flu. She is doing ok currently.

The kids and I are still good. Here's hoping for the best!

Today is day #4

I looked around the internet trying to find out what people are experiencing each day, and I found almost nothing. Then again, I am not on social media.....

I figured I should give an idea what to expect, or at least what our experience has been each day. Putting a face to this thing helps me - I just can't tell from the media's reaction. They are doing a great job spreading fear, a horrible job reporting on facts - on just how this thing will effect most people.

The kids and I are still healthy. Most cases present within 5 days of exposure, so I will be happy if we make it through tomorrow healthy! We are not out of the woods yet, and every morning when I wake up I wonder if I have it now, or if I am just getting too old to sleep on the couch!

Edit: next time I buy a couch it will be 6" longer!!!

Liz has no fever this morning, didn't sleep well the past two nights, her shortness of breath remains the same as day 1 - some, but not too bad. She has a cough, I don't hear it often so I don't think it is too bad.

She is eating little - it just comes out the other end within a short period. Gatorade, applesauce, white rice seem to go over well.

I'll be happy if it does not get any worse. The unknown is the hard part. I think it hits everyone differently and to different degrees.

My wife is one of the healthiest people I know, so I have high hopes that she will come out of this ok.

Thanks for all of your prayers, and too for those of you who have offered help.

We are doing ok. My sister is bringing us some groceries today, and we really don't need anything at the moment.

We aren't living in fear - so far this has not been as bad as has been made to sound. I hope that is the case for most people...

Andy,

We are praying and thinking about you guys. I’m in Allentown every day at my office (alone, everyone else is remote), but UPS still comes daily so I can ship things. Happy to throw together some dry goods or something and get it over to you. Please let me know if I can help.

Day #5

Kids and I are still kicking!

I've been asking Liz on a scale of 1-10 (10 being best) how she feels each day. She said a 5 yesterday, and this morning she said 7!

She slept well last night, her aches have gone for the moment, headaches come and go but are getting less frequent. Breathing is fine, she does still cough when she is up and around.

Mornings she does not have a fever, that seems to come in the afternoon evening. Last night it was around 100 again until Tylenol brought it down.

She ate an omlette and toast for breakfast, and that seemed fine so far.

I realized after the first day or so that she is not dying, so I generally leave things and pick them up outside of her door. I feel that is much safer than going into the room.

I found out last night that she did a phone interview for a new job yesterday - I found that humourous!

She is resigning from the nursing home - I proofed her (scathing) letter to them yesterday and made her cut it back a few notches...

I found more info on sanitizing and even a nice graphic. This should be plastered all over the internet!

I've mixed up a gallon of disenfectant with bleach and have wiped down nearly everything. We have mostly hard floors, going to run that through the floor scrubber today as well. The house smells like a swimming pool!

Overall, we are doing great. I'm grateful that our situation has so far been mild and manageable!

I'm glad to hear that every thing seems well and appears to be improving.
From what little positive I've read it seems most people handle it quite well.
Of course you do not see those stories on the mainstream...nor how quickly those that recover do so...it seems that the numbers of people that are and have recovered are not numbers that the media wants to eagerly put out.

I'm glad to hear things are looking up at your house Andy.

I'm not in panic mode by any means yet. I'm finding it really annoying that I have not seen a package of toilet paper on a store shelf in over 3 weeks. Every place online is either out of stock or will only sell from the store what is probably sold out. All the people who have a years supply on hand can WIPE MY ASS!
