Going to pick up one of these for when we're out and about - Yaesu VX-8R, Yaesu VX-8DR Amateur HT VX8R

Is that a good deal for $350? I got the $24 beofeng thru Amazon that i've used on trailrides to listen in. I'm guessing this thing is way more capable...Your one step ahead of me, I am fixated on passing test, then I will become obsessed with equipment. Wife is already seeing that one coming!

Who else is hamming it up tomorrow in Greenville?

Realized earlier this week that it was the 21st, wife's birthday. Then the Spartanburg test coincides with the baby's due date. Dang it.

Me, myself, I, Rob, @bro......a bunch of us! Understand the pickle you are in, make a good decision! Don't give your wife cause to not be supportive of the Land Cruiser community! Happy wife usually means happy life!

We all passed! @bro, myself and Rob's longtime bud who has a jeep but we will lovingly get him into a Cruiser! Relief to get it done!

Was amazed that they ask you if you want to go ahead and take the test for the next level.......I did get a perfect score on the Technician test despite never doing so on the 40+ practice tests I took but was not feeling lucky enough to venture to the next level!

So who has their General or Amateur Extra?? Time to get some more capable equipment i guess......

Yup! @JToobe showed everyone up this morning by getting a perfect 35/35. Not bad for not having taken a test since Nixon was in office. My buddy Barrett should be making a mud account soon and joining us on our cruising/radio ambitions. We should all have our call signs by Monday/Tuesday of next week.

Yessir, not bad at all. Pretty sure the rest of the folks in the class thought we were going to bomb the exam since we were cutting up and not taking it too seriously. And you're correct, 2.5 years older. It was rolling off the assembly line before I was ever an alcohol fueled glimmer in my parents' eyes.

For @the gimpey one

For the BaoFeng radios, 2 quick ways that I have found to use it. You can also go into the menu and change the readout on the radio to show your named channels or the actual frequency in use.

1) Preferred - You need a programming cable to do this, but download the CHIRP program to your computer. Home - CHIRP With it you can create and upload a channel list of frequencies. This is helpful if you have a list of known freqs that you may use, and can also put GMRS/FRS and repeater freqs from the database.

2) Push the orange VFO/MR button on the radio to jump from channel mode to frequency mode. Use the number pad to enter the 6 digit freq. This can be done even if you have done step 1 but need to jump on a different freq.

Thanks, @Bryanseye I've needed a reminder to program mine. I hope I can remember by tomorrow when I'm back where my radios are! Oh....still need to start to study to take the test.

No. I'm not transmitting anything yet, just listening. Actually, I mostly listen to FM radio on the damn things.

Apparently mine started receiving FM radio last weekend when I loaned it out. No idea why, and it didnt do it next time it was used.

I picked up a Baofeng UV-5R a couple of weeks ago in anticipation of a trail ride with you respectable and God-fearing gents of Upstate Cruisers. I'm having difficulty downloading a USB driver that works on my MacBook so I can program the channel list into the radio. The latest driver I've found is from 2014 and that is many OSX updates ago. Does anyone have insight, guidance, or help he is willing to offer? Thanks

I used chirp on mine. Was really easy to do. Think I still have the program cable.
I will use chirp. Just thought that may be handy to post for someone.
