I just yanked the CB. Installed a Midland GMRS. Also have the baofeng. I understand the midland can run HAM. Haven’t tried yet. The midland is all ran from mic. Unit under dash and installed a plug in the factory hole. Got that from solve function. Don’t mind the dust. It’s an RJ45 jack extension cable allows head unit to be behind the footwell kick panel

Anyone have an opinion on this radio? I'm wanting to upgrade from the baofeng handheld to something stationary

From watching the ONSC thread, it looks like most of them are going GMRS now…

Getting the tech license is far easier and cheaper than most of what is done on these vehicles. The club is mainly using simplex VHF communication on 1-2 frequencies that is functionally not much different than GMRS, so we have not explored the advantages of ham as a club. For example, using tones is an easy option to shut out other traffic, or being able to hit repeaters to reach someone else if needed in a cell deadzone could be helpful.

If I was shopping for a mobile radio, I would look for a dualband VHF/UHF as a more powerful version of the handheld that most are using. That way you can talk on 2M, but still be able to dial in a GMRS freq for those that prefer it.

For UC area licensing, there are monthly options.

@Bryanseye Havent been to a BRARS Hamfest in years.... just seems so far from Charleston... If conditions are excellent i cant get into their repeater from Charleston on my base station.
