Best news is that tomorrow, I am not talking months , but rather DAYS.

Sorry for all the posts, but I am super excited and cant wait to be part of the CTTC group with an actual vehicle!

30 days to go!

Oh, the anticipation! A young German couple just passed through Vancouver Island in their HZJ78 Troopy in the way to Tierra Del Fuego. So you're not the only jealous one! I'm humbly getting my steering gear box rebuilt for my BJ74

Hi All!

I'm sorry that it's so quiet on this side :(. The glueing and clamping of all the drawers are FINALLY done, so I've started filling, sanding and painting. It is tedious as hell!!! But this is what the right side will look like . . . (I'm considering painting the lot in this light green???)

Jan is going to make a hardwood top to go over the sink and stove, and that will have a "lid" which will hinge at the back. When lifted up, it will protect the blinds over the windows, when cooking.

I bought seat covers and something to go over the dashboard, and I'm really impressed with this product by Escape Gear.

We cannot yet decide where we want to put in speakers, so Jan bought me this nifty little present.

It's an Ultimate Ears Boom 1 bluetooth speaker. It's second generation, but with the ridiculous Rand/Dollar exchange rate the newest one was just too expensive. After not having any sound in the car for a year, this is heaven  It has the added bonus of being portable, so when we camp, it will come out to sit with us at the fire.

And lastly, I have covered the back windows with magnetic mosquito nets. I'm not completely sold on having them on the outside, but will see how long they last before they get nicked.

This is all the news from sunny warm Cape Town. Have a blessed weekend!!!

On FB I saw that they were in your neck of the woods, so I wondered if you caught up with one another???

Yes, we had breakfast quickly the morning they arrived onto the island. They spent a few days in Tofino, got in some surfing. Crazy, wetsuit required! On the way through to Victoria they came by after dinner, had a great visit and camped in my back field. They had a quick stop
at Radd Cruisers to get some service, get new struts for the pop-top and then they were on their way. I truly enjoyed their company.
Makes for a very small world! I wish them safe travels. J

Troepadoer, the cupboards are looking good. How do the drawers stay closed - are they on special runners or will you need clips for each one.

I will have the standard AluCab zip cupboard fronts that might need to be modified, and I quite like your idea.

We will be using these. They are both lock and handle

We will be using a similar product as these as locks/handles on the drawers:

There are no runners on our drawers. We have vesconite strips under the drawers, and on the bottom of the shelf that the drawer sits on. This makes for a very smooth slide, and does not clog up with dust, as we have found our aluminium drawers do in our 80 series. They start squeaking when we go into the bush, and that drive me insane!

I looked at Alucab's zip-front cupboards, and I was worried that stuff might fall out when you are climbing over some rocks or going on strange angles? I will look forward to hear what you think of them!!!

Hi Troepadoer
I am following you build and set up , very nice job !
Just a small comment on your choice of locker /handel for drawers , I had a very similar locks long time ago .
at first they work well , but after some time , and most of all dust , they clog .
I mean you push the button , but they don't pop up .
I think the dust make too much resistance and you drive mad when you need to reach something quickly .

my Iask which thickness of wood did you use ?
marine grade ?

just my 2 cents

Hi Renago! Thank you for your input!!! We will definitely reconsider using these handles now, because it will be a big problem should the drawers get stuck  What did you use instead? Please send pics of your setup???

I used 12mm construction ply. The marine ply is VERY expensive in South Africa, and I figured that this one will not be my final build. We will travel with this setup for a while to see if everything is where we want it to be, and if the setup works for our travel style. Only when we've figured out all these puzzle pieces, will we do a "proper" build with marine ply.

I have already realized that I should have made the "shelf" on which the drawer sits, 12 mm shorter and the drawer front 12 mm higher, so that I don't have all these horizontal lines running across the cupboard face. They do not line up precisely, and that irritates me!!! But I'll live with it for now.

Look forward to hearing from you on those handles!

tomorrow I will make you some photos of my latest locker.
I had in the past wood boxes , all ok , but very heavy .
they were made with 10 mm plywood .That's were I had your lockers .
the latest boxes are custom made in 2 mm aluminium , super light and tough .
big improvement on lockers .

bye Renago

Hi @renago

I am nearing the moment of putting locks/handles on the drawers. Have you perhaps had a chance of taking a photo(s) of your setup so that I can see the kind of locks you are using?

Much appreciated!!!

Loaded up wife, two golden retrievers, fridge, two SUP's and a weekend's supply of food and headed off to a friends house in Pringle Bay. Ooops, forgot to mention we also loaded our 6ft4inch son somewhere in the back! Had his knees around his neck, but all in all, a great family weekend driving the new baby.

Started doing all the small fixes/modifications to lights, the fridge mounting slider, and generally just cleaning up wiring, etc.

Will start bigger mods once I take some leave.

Merry Christmas folks,

Got lots of little goodies for the Cruiser for Christmas, and already started fitting some, like a rear work light and dual USB output that replaces the blank switch plates on the dash. Still to mount new fire extinguisher and caravan site male/female plug for power connection.

Spent Christmas day in Grotto Bay overlooking the sea. This was after getting a bit bogged down on a very sandy road, and having to lower tyre pressure, use low range, and both diff locks to get out - excitement for the day.

Congrats on the long awaited Troopy!

Alet now that you have used your's a good number of times, is the bed wide enough to allow Jan to get up and take the preverbial "midnight leak" and climb back into bed without disturbing your sleep or have you improvised ?
