I followed the advice in this thread and replace the cover and added filters. Thanks!

I know it's more of a cut under the small door to retro the old panel to work but does anyone have the measurements of the opening. It's pretty self explanatory but I don't want to screw it up. Thanks!

Just wanted to confirm

  • 88891-60050 No. 2 Cooler Cover (filter access door)
  • 88891-60040 No. 1 Cooler Cover
  • 88568-60010 (x2) Air Filters

Do these part numbers work for a 2004 LC as well?

I believe you got one number wrong. 88891-60060 is the one you need, not 60050.
The other numbers are correct.
I just did the conversion on my 2004 last week.

88891-60060 is actually the cover cooler No. 1 (small access door suitable for both RHD & LHD vehicles) Orientation and clips are identical

88891-60040 is the main cover for LHD vehicles only (slot is on the right)

88891-60030 is the correct part for anyone in Australia (RHD) where the access slot needs to be on the left. The DENSO part name for this is 245440-8452.

Filters are the same
Just done this on my LC standard, not much dust in there at all... probably because it’s all through the vents and cab!

Kit available with or without filters:
Good State spare parts GS52 (without filters)
Good State spare parts GS44 (with two filters)

I have no affiliation with them.

Will still need to cut the two filters if it’s an Aussie LC100 or 105 diesel.

I just did this mod last week and all is well!!

You can see the lines where to cut. At least I did have lines. I didn’t get a pic prior to cutting. Sorry. I used a oscillating saw to cut opening. Wasn’t the neatest but did the trick.

I purchased the cover from:
toyotapartsdeal.com
Cover,cooler, No1
Item 88891-60050
On packing list it lists as 88891-60050 but package says 88891-60060. I assume they are identical and universal. It fit just fine. Just be careful not to break the clip tabs. They will snap!

For those of us with half a filter space available there are apparently two options to sort out our issue.

Option 1: cut the filter in half as shown in previous photographs (I did this)
Option2: cut the plastic spacing out in the filter box (a little more difficult to achieve but will try that option next time I have some spare time to chip away at more updates/modifications/upgrades
@TLEXAS, did you ever attempt to cut out the plastic that was preventing a full size filter from fitting? Curious to know whether it's just dead space behind it or whether I'd destroy my evap box by trying to do it.

Cheers!

Have not tried to cut the internal spacer out as yet. Been tinkering with all sorts of under bonnet tweaks. Fitted a 3" dump pipe off the back end of the GTurbo to bring the power curve forward. Spools up much quicker from the get go. Always have a list of tweaks and mods many of them initiated from trawling through this website.

I just wanted to chime in and say that I ordered just the cover and the two pack of filters, total cost under $50, and used an oscillating saw to cut my filter box opening identical to yours using the mold outlines as a guide. I was very careful to avoid letting the saw get out of control as there are a few connectors and several dozen signal wires within 3” of the cut edges. Total time to remove the glove box and interior glove box cover, cut the hole, install the filters and the new cover and reinstall the glove box parts was under 20 minutes. Hardest part was honestly getting the screws under the glove box to go back in the same holes.

Very industrious to cut opening for filters. But so much easier and cleaner to just replace face plate w/seal at same time.

I did this mod this weekend as well. The bottom left screw is the tricky one. I used a short stubby Phillips head, and I loosened the bottom screw of the trim. I pulled the bottom piece of trim back fairly hard, enough to get quite a bend out of it. With that bottom screw out I was able to pull out enough clearance to get the stubby Phillips in and turn it no problem. I was worried that I’d snap that trim piece that sits at the bottom of the glove box, but it flexed quite a bit for me. Other than that, just remember to find those two screws at the top. Flashlight is key. Total of 8 screws. Other than that it’s just a matter of fanagling the thing in an out but it’s very doable. I got two MicroGard 3657 filters from OReilly, they fit perfectly. MicroGard is made by Wix. $34 for the pair. Easiest to find these filters if you search for the LX470 cabin filter. If you filter a search on Land Cruiser, cabin filters may not show.

I stumbled onto this while I was searching for the fix to the water drip in the passenger footwell. That turned out to be that the gasket was missing altogether, which aggravates me because that means the Toyota dealer who used to service this truck lost it.

I appreciate the folks who figured this out, thanks so much for a great mod. Chalk this up to another cheezy thing Toyota purposely omitted just to sell the Lexus for $10,000 more.

edit - let me also mention that when I pulled the trim back, I grabbed it from the middle of the piece under the glove box. Dead center of where the bottom of the glove box would sit. Pull it back towards the passenger seat as if you’re bending it into a U. You won’t go that far of course, but you can bend it enough that you’ll have a big enough gap to the side to get a stub screwdriver in. Remember to take that bolt out from the bottom left corner!

I just bought a kit for Australian spec 2006 GXL and have found like most with no filters or door, but it seems I have the same issue as @TLEXAS.

Does anyone know why there is a barrier in there and if it can be removed. I know others have cut the filter down, but would like the filter to cover both fresh and recirculated air. Mine has a slight gap in the middle so looks like there is a void behind it but does it serve a functional purpose?

Had to have my evap replaced as it got so gunked up that it failed and don't want it to happen again. Do a bit of remote travel and our red dirt here in Oz just gets into everything and is so hard to remove. Would rather keep it out of the aircon system and our lungs.

Still need to remove the blower to check how much dirt is in that housing, but my setup seems to be a bit different to what I've found on the internet. Think it is probably just a few extra things that need to be removed to access.

@TLEXAS, have you done anymore on yours?

Have read on some previous post that folk with short pocketed inserts for filters have cut out the plastic spacer but have not managed or rather bothered to do it as yet. Been tweaking performance stuff under the bonnet

Bit the bullet today and cut my separator out. Was a bit tight to access, would've have been easier if the condenser was removed but I had just paid to have it replaced and regassed, so want too keen on paying again.

Had originally planned to use a sharp knife the cut it out but access excluded that, so it ended up being a hacksaw blade job. Not that pretty but it did the job. Simply did a vertical cut all the way to the top and bottom then put pressure on the tab and it broke off. Then just cleaned up where it broke off, was much easier than trying to somehow get the hacksaw to do the horizontal cut.

The hardest part was at the top, there is a couple of rails/guides that run front to back, and cutting out in between them was tricky.

It definitely does restrict air flow, but with my new condenser unit we pretty much never have it above the first setting anyway so worst case will be going to setting two.

Pulled out the blower as well, but nothing but caked on red dirt in the blades and the housing.

Thanks to all for their previous posts, a great source of information.

Hey mate, was this a pretty tricky job to do? I wouldn't mind having a go at mine as well but don't want to risk absolutely destroying the box or the evap unit.

By "restrictive" do you mean just because it has an additional filter or are you saying it's more restrictive than the overseas ones that came out with the box without the separator?

Did you just drill a small hole to use as the starter to put the hacksaw blade in?

If you've got any more tips/photos that'd be really appreciated!

Cheers!

Hi kcslb92

To be honest it was pretty easy in the end. The biggest risk is when I tried to break off the plastic part at the bottom because I only made one cut. Would definitely recommend to make multiple cuts vertical cuts so it's not so violent of snap both top and bottom.

My separator actually had a horizontal slot in the middle, so simply pushed the bottom part back to start the cutting the top. My bottom cut was pretty ordinary as you might see in the photo.

As mentioned, the hardest part was at the top, trying to cutout in between the rails. My filters are still a tight fit but they are removable through the cover.

As for restrictive, it is purely from observation that the air flow out of the vent seems to be less with the filters but haven't measured it.

Goodluck

So I bit the bullet today and did it; whilst it was a tedious as far as cutting out the false wall with a hacksaw blade in a confined space, it actually turned out pretty good.

I took a few pictures and was going to do a write up on it on LCOOL but it was actually quite straight forward to do.

I also replaced the lower seal with some sponge strip from Clark Rubber as well as installed another sponge strip all the way around the mating surface of the face place. Mine didn't have one previously but I believe they're meant to?

Anyway here's hoping that all of the dripping on passengers feet is gone as well as nice clean filtered air!

Thanks for the pics and encouragement to cut up my box to fit the filters.
