Does anyone know a ball park cost to install the 03+ 5-speed into an 02- LC100? I saw the 1991 80 series in the classifieds with 05 Tundra engine and Lexus 5-speed... got me thinking that a very high milage 02- 100 series might be the truck I am looking for... the lower cost could allow me to make these swaps and still come out under the cost of an 03+...

Or am I just doing wrong thinking? I see the high mile 02- trucks going for ~$12k, and the average mile 03+ trucks going for >$22k. I really want the 5-speed, but I could do without the NAV.

The other option that I am considering is to keep looking for an affordable 03+, and then plan down the road to swap in the non-NAV dash from other LC markets (Canada, Mexico or others), or at least prepare for the day that the NAV goes out.

I'll probably ping the guy who did that 1991 swap in the classifieds for cost estimates, but am interested in all your opinions until then. Thanks for playing :)

Couple of thoughts to consider

.How do you plan to control the 5speed -different ECU
.Owning a couple of converted LC I can tell you will need to learn to do your own work because most wont touch it.
.You have only looked for a couple weeks - you need to give yourself more time if you are going to be picky.
. Why change out the NAV if it there. I just hit the no screen and you dont even know its there.
.You can get side curtain air bags on a '03+ well worth the safety IMO

Thanks guys. I have read similar thoughts on the forum before, and I can see the wisdom. I give myself about 9 months before I really need another 4wheeler, so I will probably take it slow and find the 5-speed that I want. But I hope to find it much sooner!

It would be about $1500 for the tranny (junkyard), $1500 for the special ECU needed to control it and whatever other extras like the gear shift trim and misc.

Thats actually fairly affordable considering if one could find a 9/10 high mileage 00-02. Beats the market for 03+ by $4-5k margin based on what i've been seeing, including labor. I appreciate the safety factor of 03+ airbags, but I am buying this vehicle only for ~10k miles of highway and off road trips each year. This is the perfect segway into my next post. Might as well do it right here:

I located a decent looking '01 Cars for Sale: 2001 Toyota Land Cruiser 4x4 in WINTER PARK , CO 80482: Sport Utility Details - 267214575 - AutoTrader.com

1) Anyone know this truck?

2) Do the heavy rear springs ride OK without any load in the back? I probably wont be towing any real loads for a few more years, and when I do it will probably only be a HD bumper, cargo boxes etc. Someday a small camp trailer? In other words, what do you all think about the ride with HD springs and no real towing load? I will be toting a baby soon...

Thanks in advance, B

BTW did you see the "water stain" coating on this guys dash? He told me that it was a dealer installed deal. a dash coating that makes it looks cool somehow and protects it? I've never heard of this, but he also says it peals off. Anyone care to comment?! Seems ludicrous to me. I thought his camera lens was dirty...

Looks like cat or animal hair.

that wood will come off.

never listen to a guy that decorates his Land Cruiser with garland and a wreath with a bow.

they ride like HD springs, I would never do it again. I might just swap them out in a few thousand miles as i have to watch every inch of road to try and make my ride better.

If I can afford the new Slee rear bumper I will see if that settles it down, if not its getting new springs or I am selling to find one with gray interior. As my lab travels every place with me and holy crap the hair drives me nuts. I go open my truck door and see and see a 7 year old truck thats clean. I open my 100 and I see dog. No smell as she is princess, but I really want gray as that is what my truck has.

Loud, Not the faux wood, Look closer - there are small white circular lines like water puddles all over the place. they cross over the wood and black plastic too, but not the buttons!

I guess this is fine if they peal off. But I am now definitely a little worried about HD springs - I guess I could also just replace them with mediums and sell the HDs for cash. But the more I play those games I might as well just buy a stocker and build to suit...

The first thing I noticed are the stock running boards... Are you sure the seller has done all those off road rescues??

Yeah I noticed those too. I am not sure that he has done all the S&R- could be a case of "all hat, no cattle". I might get motivated if he can show me all the receipts for maintenance including timing belt, water pump, diffs, he says its all been done.

My biggest reservation about this truck is the HD springs. I suppose I could swap out the rear for Mediums. Is it unusual to have medium in rear and HD torsion bars for the ARB/TMAX? My ol 4runner had HD front springs and medium rear, it rode fine for an offroader, a bit stiff in front because I did not have any HD equipment in front, but the rear was good. Will HD in rear of this LC upset the baby and the beer cooler?

I might give Slee a call to discuss. I could potentially get work done at his shop right after I purchase. Maybe even get his crew to inspect before purchase...

2001 138k miles for $15000?

Thanks guys for dealing with my shopping questions.

What do you all think about this 2001 with 138k miles? The dealership sent me a clean carfax, but there is no way to verify any service. I will have to fly to LA to inspect, but I'd like to know whether you all think it's priced fairly assuming it checks out.

Was an Arizona truck. Probably a grocery getter, almost definitely not a Search and Rescue. The higher miles (compared to the S&R truck above) do not bother me as I will only be driving 5-10k miles each year as a road trip/expedition vehicle. Thanks again, Brian.

no way - too much $$$

I recently sold a 2002, 96K with the 90K completed for $16K. I know I could have gotten slightly more, but it needed tires all around and I was tired of answering lookie lou emails! TOO MANY MILES AND TOO MUCH MONEY! I would wait and be patient. What is your budget? I know of a sweet 2004 that is ready to go for off road, needs sliders is all.

What is your budget?

That $15k number is pretty close to my budget...

I just talked to a private party (no sales tax in NV for private party sales) with a very clean 02 stocker, all receipts, recent timing belt and fluids flushed, brake pads, plugs, battery, tint, brand new BFG ATs... 120k So Cal and AZ miles...

I hear what you are all saying about patience. I guess thats why I've been posting here, for you all to temper me. Much appreciated!

Questions for Hundy owners

Hello all,
I'm looking into importing a 100 series or LX 470 into canada in the next month or so. The wife and I need a larger SUV than our current 02 grand cherokee. Its getting up in miles and always has something wrong with it. One criteria we had for our new SUV is the size of the rear cargo area behind the second row. It needs to be 4 feet wide at its narrowest and 3 feet long behind the 2nd row. We will be permanently removing the 3rd row. The goal is to get two dog crates length ways side by side. The crates are about 24" wide 28"high and 36" long. I havn't seen a 470 in person but did look at the newer 570. It was sure nice. The trouble on it was the power 3rd row wasn't removable.

Next questions is what year to get. It seems like 06 and 07 are best since they have the boosted HP numbers. The competitors for the spot in the garage are and 1st gen sequoia, 2nd gen sequoia, Nissan Armada, and the suburbans. Comments on those truck are appreciated as well.

How many miles can you put on these truck before running into troubles? We'll be in this one for life and I'm hoping it last just like the old cruisers. Any best spots or areas to look for these units. I'm willing to travel anywhere in the US.

Thanks for answering the questions.

Tyler

The 470/LC is only about 42 inches between the wheel wells in the cargo area. I measured it the other day to fit a hood in there.

If room is a major requirement then I would go with the Seqouia or the Burb. The LC/470 isn't really that big.

That was with the seats removed? Bummer.

Tyler, you could possibly fit your two crates if you build a platform or drawers about 7" high off the trunk floor, which is above the wheel wells. I don't have my 100 close by so I can't tell you for sure. It also might be a bit of a chore to remove the crates as the tailgate opening is also about 42" wide.

If the 3rd row seats on the LX570 are the same as on the LC200, they are indeed removable.
