Keep Taco or buy 100?

I guess this as good a place as any to ask this question. I have an 07 double cab 4wd Tacoma with 60k on the clock. The truck is paid off and I haven't had any major problems with it. I've been kicking around the idea of trading it for an 04+ 100, if I can find one clean, with less than 70k miles. I haven't made up my mind because I'm not exactly rich. The reason I want to swich to an SUV is I want more room for people and I don't want to store my gear in the bed of a truck anymore. I know this is an LC forum, so I expect biased answers. I guess quesiton one is: Is it a stupid idea to trade a paid off truck for something that I'll potentially have a note on?

Another concern that I have is mud. I don't wheel much for fun, but I do end up in very muddy areas as a result of hunting/fishing/camping and general man-type activities. My Tacoma is light and has no issues with the mud. Considering the weight of the 100, will I have more problems navigating the occassional mud hole? Real world feeback from owners is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for comments and opinions.

Honestly, your first question is one that is entirely subjective. It will all depend on your personal financial situation. While I do personally believe that living as debt free as possible is the way to go, you will have alot more vehicle for your money getting into a TLC.

One question you might ask yourself is this:

Why an 04+, and why under 70K miles? LC's are built extremely well, and it's not uncommon to find ones with well over 100K miles (some upwards of 150K) that have been well maintained and drive as well as they did off of the showroom floor. The only difference for you would be cost...ie, substantially lower than an example with 70K miles. This could be an easy way for you to get into a rig on nearly a clean trade. I know that high mileage makes most of us cringe (plenty of my friends have looked at me like I'm nuts when I talk about financing a 10+ year old rig with 140K miles), but it's really not something to be concerned about provided you get a well maintained vehicle.

Model year 03 is when they changed the interior and transmission, so again I'm curious as to why you'd pick on 04+. Personal preference maybe? I have a friend who won't buy anything older than 6 years/60,000 miles. His loss as far as I'm concerend. :)

As far as the mud situation, LCs are extremely heavy as you know. I'm not a mudder so I can't speak with experience to that particular question, but I've seen plenty of hundies on here that do ok in the sticky stuff. I would imagine that tires play a huge part there.

Salvo I just sold a Taco to buy a 100 so I think you're on the right track.. mud performance will have a lot to do with what kind of tires you get on there, but these things are pretty cable and I think you'll have a hard time finding something a 100 can't do that your Taco could..

By the way Nak, I'm still waiting for a picture thread of your new hundy...or did I miss it?

Did I mention that I'm jealous? :)

The search continues on my end, although there is a Mud member in GJ that has one for sale that i'm eyeballing pretty hard.

Yeah yeah.. was thinking I'd wait until I get a few mods done before posting up a new thread, yeah that's it. Other than a ham radio install, I'm still in ultra stock form... but here you go:

99 Cruiser

I'm looking for a 100 for my wife, she likes our 80 but as a daily driver it lacks certain creature comforts that she has grown used to. The 80 will be reserved for medium duty off-roading, but we will use the 100 for the occasional off road excursion, so a locker would be a plus.

Does this cruiser seem like an ok deal? The price seems fair for the mileage, and it does have a locker. I'm in SoCal so it's quite a drive for me to go check it out.

Thanks,
Chris

Nice rig, man! Looks super clean.

I'd prefer a 2000-2002 for the 4-pinion front diff and ATRAC (my plan would be to ARB it front/rear anyway) with less than 150K on it, but if the price is right then I'll jump on a 99 w/ rear locker.

That one looks nice, mileage is a tad high for my tastes but if its got maintenance records that might work. Thanks for the heads up!

I drove that truck last week and it is VERY solid and nice. Interior is clean, etc. It is at a small dealer but they were very honest and straightforward, not the typical corner scheisters. I would've made an offer but didn't want to pay tax and am primarily looking for a 2000+.

Here is the CarFax for it too: CARFAX Report: 1999 TOYOTA LANDCRUISER VIN JT3HT05J2X0043460

Thanks Andy! Great info to have before I consider driving 6 hours to go see it :hhmm:.

There is a highly respected Toyota shop called MotorTek that isn't too far from that dealer that would be able to do a thorough PPI. I'd guess the dealer would be willing to get it over to them.

Welcome to MotorTekAZ.com

I also drove the blue '03 that is currently listed on Craigslist in AZ. It looks better in pics but was very solid, no obvious leaks, etc. Just needs a good interior detail. His asking price is on par w/ the market right now but a bit too high for my liking.

Please help me choose.

Vehicle 1:

2002 Landcruiser with 81K miles. 2 owner vehicle, very well maintained but no 90K service yet. Not my first choice of interior or exterior color. Price $18000

Vehicle 2:

2002 LX470 with 84L miles. 1 owner vehicle. This too very well maintained but no 90K service yet. My choice of exterior color but not my first choice of interior color. Price $19000

I am leaning towards the LX470 for all the little bits and pieces of extra comfort options available, but am concerned about the AHC and the parts and repair costs being more it being a lexus.

I need the vehicle pretty soon and these are very close to me.

Thank you.

Personally, as long as these darn trucks last I'd consider long and hard before I settled on a color combination that I wasn't crazy about!

Are you going to lift it or keep it stock? If the former, then not having the AHC might be a plus.

Do you mind having the Clinton-era nav system? If not, you may want to look for an 03+ or a 2000. It's pretty rare to find an 02 (LX) without Nav.

Good luck in your decision and look forward to the pics of whatever vehicle you decide on!

Thank you for the response.

The truck is going to be stock. I am more concerned about the AHC failing and the price difference on regular maitainences.

Also what do you think of the prices?

Well, I have an 2000 LC, so no AHC for me. There are a number of posts on the subject here and my perception is that folks with reasonable technical skills and tools can perform maintenance and/or repairs.

Regarding the prices, they seem reasonable to me. There will always be someone posting that they got a better deal so don't let that sway you; if the price is reasonable and you like the truck then buy it. Depending upon where you are in the country, these rigs can be a little rare.

Oh, and the last caution is to look for rust under the truck if it come from one of the rustbelt states. But if you don't plan on doing your own wrenching then that might not be as big of a concern.

Hi, I'm kicking around selling the wife's 3rd gen 4Runner and getting a 100 series for her to haul the kids around. Would keep it stock.

Looking at a stock 2000 LC, 150k, California vehicle, all maintenance records, no accidents, never wheeled, some minor scratches and dings, interior is not super clean, but could be cleaned up. 2nd owner, has had it since late 2000. I think I could get the seller down to $9500. What do you guys think?

Help me identify the color of this LC

Hello,

Just joined the forum and I am currently looking at a 2002 LC. From the pictures, I just cannot make out if it is Champagne Pearl or Thunder Cloud. The owner says it is Silver, but for some reason i have my doubts.

Pictures in the attached link.

Thank you.

Definitely Champagne Pearl (just like mine, except mine's a 2003).
