Buying an fj40 plan to drive it 850 miles home what should I check?

Well this morning before heading out from lusk I lost my ride share hippy companion, for her own personal reasons she decided that she has some more stuff to do in co before she can move to Minnesota, I am now just delivering her stuff that is in the cruiser to her friends house in Minnesota.

Anyway tonight I am in Faith South Dakota, and had a pretty good day still problem free with the cruiser! I am going to go get some dinner and afterwords I will type up how the journey went today and upload and post pictures! And let me tell you guys I was in some pretty cool places today.

every move I have made in this country has involved long road trips - loved every minute of it

my last long road trip was last year, the 5 days before the Cruise Moab event - 1800 miles all by myself in BFE Arizona and Utah in the 40

Alright, now that I no longer smell like a rotten foot.
This morning I got a bit of a later start than I would have liked due to my rideshare companion parting ways and the hotel having a nice spread for breakfast.

Anyway I was soon on my way to the fuel station, where an older guy saw me walking out to my FJ40 and commented that I nice old Toyota and that he didn't see them very often. So armed with my super pimp sunglasses I picked up at the gas station I hit the road heading north, after about an hour or so I crossed into South Dakota.

I drove for a little while nothing too exciting.

When I came into the black hills...

I drove for a little while until I saw an opportunity to make sure my 4wd is functioning properly by exploring a logging trail I spotted off the road.

Not much later from getting off the trail I came upon the Crazy Horse monument, and had to check it out (actually spent a couple hours there looking at stuff/reading). The famous crazy horse quote is "My land is where my people are buried" for those that didn't know, also I was surprised to learn that the whole crazy horse monument is privately funded, and is the largest monument in the world carved from stone.

While at the crazy horse monument I worked up a bit of an appetite so I visited their cafe and had some lunch.

Again with the driving thing, I was not expecting the black hills to be so hilly...travel was slow and interesting in the FJ.

I thought this was a pretty cool spot to pull over and take a picture.

So then I ended up at Mt.Rushmore, and thought gee it would be way cool to get a pic of Mt.Rushmore in the back ground and the FJ40 in the foreground.

So I got one did the illegal u turn and all for the pic.

A few minutes later I found myself at the mercy of an officer of the law...pulled me over for no license plates, being prepared I had my proof of insurance drivers license and bill of sale handy a few minutes sitting in his squad car with him visiting, I asked if I could take a picture of his patrol car with my cruiser pulled which he kindly allowed, and wished me safe journeys on the rest of my way home.

I thought this was kinda neat so I took a picture.

So then it started to snow when I was near Deadwood SD, I pulled over fueled up, went into the station and the man working the register had a computer there and was kind enough to look up the weather for me, turned out to be just a small blip.

Being from a motorcycle riding family I have always wanted to check out Sturgis, after going through there today, not sure what all the fuss is about. I also stopped at radioshack and picked up some headphones so I could listen to tunes since I derped out hardcore and forgot mine at home.

After all the hills and sharp turns and wet roads and snow and ice this was a much welcomed sight.

Which brings me to where I am now a motel in Faith South Dakota.

Thanks for following my journey, I should have 9 more hours of driving tomorrow to reach home.

We will see in the morning, if do that I have a bit over 600 miles to go, my 850 mile trip is ending up being much greater.

I drove 5300 miles on a week long vacation in 2010 through that area (found my cruiser on this trip) I have that exact same photo of the tunnel outside of keystone. Very surreal seeing that pic.

Do you hit the showers with the PJ wearing chick? Just think of it like riding a scooter... Fun till a friend see you, but since this is mud, we all approve and will advert our eyes from the pics you post of that showering scooter..

Man that looks awesome. It looks like you are taking only highways and back roads with no freeways so far was that your plan? I've had my 40 since 06 and it has never been on a freeway except on a trailer. Love these kinda trips, please keep the story and the pictures coming.
