Why would ANYONE sell an FJ60/62 back to a dealer, especially right now. Wash, polish it up and slap it on bring a trailer for at least $10k.
Cash for Clunkers killed off a LOT of 60s, 62s and even some 80s. The mandated decommissioning process included draining the engine oil and then putting a gallon or so of sodium silicate in the crankcase. The engine was then started and run at a fast idle until it locked-up. It took 2Fs a long time to die. It was (and forever remains) sickening to me.It's hard to believe anyone would do that, but if you have a rusted, beat, and barely running 60/62, you may get more from Toyota than from selling or parting it out. At that point its simply a financial/business decision. With that said, I bet there may be just a handful that get bought back each year. Sad, but many more probably get totaled in accidents....and still a small number compared to how many 60/62/80s were crushed by that disaster of a program called "Cash for Clunkers."

Chevy's died a lot faster. This one lasted about 15 seconds.
Just the thought of that gets me a little emotional. Seriously. It sounds like the automotive equivalent of lethal injection, on an innocent subject, for the "crime" of not being environmentally friendly enough. Even though the whole thing was nothing more than "feel good" legislation that probably had no more of an impact on CO2 emissions that what China puts out in 1 day from coal fired plants....end of rant.
Did the wreckers at least get to part out the rest of the vehicle so others could live longer?
So yes there aren’t parts for the recall anymore. I know of two 60’s a guy had that toyota bought back from him last year and then crushed. This was at a dealership I used to work at. One thing I have had good luck with is I take my fuel tanks to a radiator shop. They clean them, pressure test them and can repair them if they are repairable. It’s worth trying. The other thing is are you certain it’s the tank? The truck is old now and there are plenty of other places for fuel vapors to leak out of. Rubber gaskets on the tank, hoses, etc. There are also places you can get used 62 tanks.Old thread, old problem. Unfortunately no new solutions. I just bought a FJ62 that does not have the tank replaced and it smells of gas. Trying to figure out how to get it fixed and the dealerships I talked with have said there is no fix, they will buy the truck from me and bring it in so they can look at it. I don't want to get rid of it but want a stock tank. Any leads on tanks out there? I've also been cautioned not to take it in because the dealer won't let me leave with my truck once they have possession of it. ANy experience with that situation out there?
Thanks.

Let me know what they offer you I will give you $100 bucks more if you are looking to get rid of it. I live in Utah as well.Old thread, old problem. Unfortunately no new solutions. Let me know when you pull it. I'd be happy to pick the OE tank from you.I'm going to swap my stock 62 tank out for a long range version in the near future. I just checked and it looks like my 62 had the recall done so that should be a good replacement tank for someone.
