broken bolts E-brake backing plate

looks like i have a repair to do . what happened ?
I pulled my rig out of storage yesterday
got stuck in the muddy yard ,locked the hubs put it in granny low (SM465)
drove it out onto the driveway parked it put the E-brake on and started to jump out
as i went to get out i guess i left it in gear ,heard a bang and some scarey noises as she died
i thought it may have been the clutch but low and behold it was the e-brake backing plate shearing off the bolts and the e-brake happily rotated around with the driveshaft yanking the e-brake cable right out of my dash

was this caused from loose bolts or just the actual torque of the rig being in bull low ?

oh well lesson learned make sure it is out of gear before taking your foot off the clutch to warm up your rig :doh:.

i did get the sheared off bolts out and found a new e-brake cable in my junk pile .

now all i have to do is reassemble it .
question dose anybody now how thick the e-brake shoes are suppose to be .i have a few used sets around and none of them look that thick

Happened to a friend of mine. He was a lucky guy. Only thing we could think of was he over torqued the 4 bolts.

At some point in the day he must have left the parking brake on and taken off. He never knew it didn't work. He was in low rage all day. As a result he about lost the rig. Got out to work the winch with the motor still running.

Just goes to show a parking brake is not always reliable. A line lock would have been better in this situation.

Go to about 50 seconds in.

 
Hi All:

Whatever the cost of a replacement output flange for the transfer case, replacement parking brake cable, and four short 8mm bolts is! :D

Seriously, it is a bit of work, one would have to drain the t-case, remove the rear drive shaft, dis-assembly the parking brake assembly, etc. to remove the output flange and parking brake cable.

The broken bolts can be removed from the output housing (by those with the proper tools and knowledge) and this part re-used.

Yes, I had a similar incident a few years ago! :o :D

all it cost me was my time .i had bolt extractors so about 5 mins of drilling and out they came . spent most of the time searching my junk bins for bolts and the spare brake cable .
reused the drum brake no damage. didn't even drain the oil I just backed it up onto some ramps
and wrapped a small rag around the splines of the output to keep the oil in . spend most of my time cleaning up an old backing plate. ,the one that got yanked on damaged the area where the cable came through it .
all in all it was a quick fix .

where did you get the 4 8 mm bolts that hold the e backing plate to the transfer case
all for of mine sheered off i drilled and tapped them out
spector off road wants 5.99 per bolt
seem like a gouge
any advice
 
Hi All:

Nope, it was many moons ago up at Walker Valley ORV Area. The side-story is the broken p-brake cable whipped forward and nicked one of the coolant hoses, causing a leak that I did not discover for awhile! :frown: :mad: :rolleyes:

Kippi, call Toyota if you don't have a fastenal or other fastener supplier in your area. I doubt even Toyota original parts are 6 bucks a bolt.
 
Does this help? New shoes installed. 90wt in the fill plug just to the left of the idler shaft.

I think the real 'clue' in this scenario was this:

"I pulled my rig out of storage yesterday"

A drum in regular use would probably have been more polished, and more marginal, like most of them are. But a drum sitting in storage, especially in the NW, probably had some TIME.....to build up some RUST...which gave the shoes the bite they needed to do the deed.
