Another update:

On May 3rd, I replaced the rear pads again at 249,500 miles (~32,800 miles)

What's odd is that the front pads lasted much longer this time around

Replaced the fronts today at 251,800 miles (~39,800 miles)

Now I'm trying to figure out why the rears saw more wear this time :hhmm:

It looks like you've got some uneven wear going on in the rear. Perhaps a piston is sticking causing some drag on the rotor?!

Possibly the load sensing proportioning valve is not working properly? This is a page from my '93 manual, I don't know if your '97 is the same.

Good eye

I noticed that as well and replaced all of the retainer clips, added new shims and greased the pins (as usual)....

The left parking brake bell crank was seized and I had to beat it back in place with a BFH, but the lopsided pad came from the right side :hhmm:

Not that I think that had anything to do with it....

Yeah, it's the same....

I didn't bleed the system yet as I'm still waiting on a back ordered bell crank, but last time I did, the valve bled fine :hhmm:

I'll definitely check it out again once the parts come in....

OK, bell crank and all associated parts came in and my parking brake is working better than ever

On a side note, I'm convinced that the reason for the rear pads wearing out faster this time around was due to my saggy rear springs :o

I had been airing up my airbags to compensate depending on load, but it's long overdue for new ones, so I ordered up a pair of 860's from Slee

Wow, cutting it close. Spec min is 1mm isnt it? Highway miles I assume. I see less than 10k on my pads, but it's a lot of canyons and fire roads.

Actually, I've been doing a bit of hauling this past interval, plus the truck is as heavy as she's ever been (full roof rack, dual swing out rear wings, BIOR bull bar front bumper and two winches), but yes, it is mostly highway :hhmm:

Just changed my front pads again tonight at 289,349 miles (37,549 on pads)

fruntpadz289349.JPG

Slightly less miles than my last interval, but these still had a bit of meat left

I just couldn't stand the screeching of the wear tabs

The ones I just got from CDan less than 2 months ago were blue

Toyota has different quality brake pads. The black ones are usually made in the USA and are lower quality. The better quality Toyota pads usually have backings that are either blue, brown, green or pink.

Their brake pads are made by a Japan company Tai Ho. It stamped on the back of the brake pads in a small circle.

I do plenty of brake jobs for my customers and I only use Japan or OEM brake pads, because they much better quality.

On my fj80, the best brake pads I've ever used were AKEBONO ACT PRO > OEM Toyota pads

Going through your posts here, so did you go with 100 series pads up front? If yes/no, reason why/why not? Thanks for any insight... just got myself a set of 100 pads.

After reading a few threads about pads not fitting right on some years and given the fact that I'm getting quite a bit of miles between sets, I just went with the 80 pads again :meh:

Replaced the rears again today at 318,308 miles (31,307 on pads)

Thing is, I just barely caught it

Didn't hear the wear sensors at all and if I would've went just one more day, I'm sure it would've cut into the rotors :o

I did a bit more stop and go driving this time around, but not nearly as much towing :hhmm:

Just find it odd that I got ~6,200 less miles out of this set

OK, interesting thing happened this time around :hhmm:

Checked the brakes when I changed the oil and rotated the tires a couple weeks ago (roughly ~2000 miles) and the pads looked like they had plenty of meat on them

Then earlier this week, I heard the distinct sound of the wear sensors scraping away, so I ordered up a set of pads and waited until I had time to pull the wheels today.

The front wheels were filthy with brake dust and the pads were almost gone

frontpads339kmiles.jpg

I'm at 339,xxx miles now, so I only got around ~23,000 miles out of this interval :meh:

I guess the 35" D-Tracs really take a toll

Side Note:
Is it true that Toyota owns a majority share in Akebono, Sumitomo, Advics, Denso, etc....
I think I would try Akebono pads in a second. If they were junk Lexus would not being using them...Besided they are the Relentless Pursuit of Perfection.

Rear pads again today at 365,550 miles (23,249)

rearpads365550.jpg

I guess the left caliper appears to be hanging up a bit cause the inside pad (piston side) seems to go a bit faster than the rest which still have a bit of meat left :hmm:

Slide pins are all greased up and everything looks fine, so if it happens again, I'll just throw in one of the used pads tow squeeze a few thousand miles out of them

Front pads at 375,xxx

frontpadsat375k.jpg

Still had a bit of meat left, but I changed them out early cause I'm in NY and probably won't be back at the shop in Orlando until January :meh:

And as easy as these things are to change, I still wouldn't want to do it in my driveway in Winter weather (I'm so spoiled with my shop lift lol)

So 12k miles on the fronts? seems pretty low unless you do a ton of city driving maybe...
