Rear Pads @ 45,000 miles today

I went through rear pads way too quickly with little wear on the fronts. The LSPV was improperly adjusted (... still is I think.)

My experience exactly. My truck is fairly stock, and just took it in for pads to be changed...rears were eaten up, including rotors, after ~50k. Fronts? Still had over 15 mm.

Ugh...stupid LSPV!

OK, I'm at 145k now or 34,000 miles since I did the first front pad change and I decided to change them again since I'll be taking a loaded trailer back home to NYC next month

Surprisingly, the old pads still look like they can go another 10 - 15k easy

Checked the rear pads and they barely show any wear :)

kind of off topic question, but where did you get the 54mm socket to get the rotors/pads off????

also how long did the OEM pads last you?

I have yet to pull the rotors on this rig, but i have a old OTC 54mm hub socket I bought a while back off a tool truck that used to come to my shop :hhmm:

It's funny cause they're readily available, just not available when you need it

Don't count on local parts stores carrying them, but there are many online sites that do...

As for the pads, when I bought my rig last year, she had 81K and the dealer installed new OEM pads and rotors all around

I replaced the pads @ 111k (30k miles), then again recently @ 145k (34k miles)

At both intervals, the old pads still had plenty of meat on them

You guys know that you can visualize the remaining pad material without removing them from the truck, right?

I wouldn't even think about replacing the pads if I still had as much material left as you have.

Sheesh!

Have a Sears near you? A 2 1/4" (or is it 2 1/8"??) socket will work just fine. And you don't need to take the rotor off to change out the pads FWIW

The Craftsman 2-1/8" is a perfect fit on the 80-Series front hub nuts. You can also order the 54mm from Cruiserdan with your birfield kit and/or you can flag down a Snap-On truck and get one of the Bluepoint hub sockets.

The one from Dan is 1/2" drive. The Craftsman is 3/4" drive so you may need a 3/4" to 1/2" adapter. My BP is also a 3/4" drive but I was told you can find them in 1/2".

I have a Craftsman 3/4" drive 2-1/8" socket in the shop that I got years ago, and just got an OTC (that's most likely who makes em for Toyota) off the Matco truck for $26 last week.
Trying to get the rear one from him now.

OK, I replaced the rears at 157,xxx a few days ago (about 31k since the last change)

The last set still had a little meat left @ 45,000 miles, but I expected these to wear out sooner since I've stepped up to larger rubber and hauiling the trailer quite a bit lately :meh:

Thing is, this set wore a bit unevenly :hhmm:

The piston side pad for each caliper got worn down much more than the outer pads

Not sure why since the pins and slides are well greased

Anyone else run into this problem?

The piston will provide more force against that side, especially in light braking situations.

It doesn't look like a huge difference in wear, especially after 30k miles. I wouldn't sweat it.

X2 Dont sweat it
if your sure your slide pins were greased, then its probably normal wear for that many miles...

You know, I was thinking on going with OEM when I just did mine, but I decided to just do Duralast from Autozone. I know, I know... don't blast me. :). The reason I did is because they have a lifetime warranty type deal. I got fronts for around 58 bucks, and the shoes for the back were fourteen. When they get to the warning strip, I just take them off and bring them back to Autozone and they give me a new set for no extra cost. I'm not sure how they keep making money, but its a good deal for me.

Look normal for a normal usage to me ;p

Buying a whole box brake cleaners is not, by the way :flipoff2:

...Hell yeah...I f-ing love brake cleaner!

I cannot believe you spend the money on quality oem pads then put antisqueak spray on them....tsk tsk.....big no no. Toyota recommends against this due to the spray being causing debris to stick to pads and possibly causing seal damage to calipers. That stuff is snake oil like belt dressing and such don't waste your time just use the factory shims and if everything else is in good shape you won't have a problem.
