I found a better battery hold down before I hit the trail that I have been using for the past few months but now it's time to step up to the real deal and use a battery cage. I took a gamble on one of the two battery boxes Trail Gear offers thinking that it just might work. And sure enough the DieHard battery box 301347-KIT they offer will work with the Odyssey battery.
Now that I knew it fit it was time to figure out how to mount this box down to the stock tray?
So my plan is to use 5/16" Nut Certs and flat head phillips head bolts.

Here is how the battery fits

The box comes with 9 holes in it but at the bottom you can see it over-hangs the stock tray so I had to add three along the bottom and move one out to hit the tray below. I also enlarged all the holes to 3/8" to allow for powder coating so a 5/16" bolt will work.

And the holes I plan to install 5/16" NutCerts into. One of the holes is a stock hole that is quite large so I will probably use a washer and a nut for this hole. Foe some reason this photo is rotates 180 degrees from the photo above?

I will post up the rest of the install when I get the battery box back from powder coat.

I got the battery box back from powder coat today. Now just waiting on the RivetNuts so I can go shopping for the shallowest bolts I can find.

So just when I thought I had made my mind up on OME coil-overs and rear shocks to go with some 2" RadFlow springs I picked up used. I now come across some ICON 2.5" coil-overs that are a couple of years old but were re-built by ICON and have not been re-installed since the re-build last year. Anyway the seller says that my SPC upper control arms I have waiting to be installed will limit the extended travel of these ICON shocks. I don't know this to be the case and was looking for some input. I don't really care about the extended travel as that would just be a bonus for me.

SPC's will not limit the travel at all, they should match up just fine. Good find!

Was able to talk to a guy at ICON who was really helpful and confirmed that these Tacoma coil-overs will work on the 4th gen 4Runner and good for the GX. But he did say that they recommend a Uni-Ball UCA for the extended travel shocks. So it may bind but said to confirm with SPC.

But then I found this on the FJ Cruiser forum and looks like it won't bind per Metal Tech. They mention Light Racing UCA but they are very similar in design to the SPC's

Well I scored the Extended travel 2.5 ICON coil-overs with wrench and diff drop for $850. :p

So now I need to re-figure the rear suspension.

I already have the MT coil conversion kit, Toyota spring isolators, and lightly used 2" RadFlo springs.

Now I am thinking I should look into MT's 3" progressive rate springs with ICON long travel 2.0 shocks. So I know I will need the MT 3" bump stop extension but would I also need the MT stainless steel extended rear brake lines? Just trying to see what size this can of worms is that I am opening up.

But I am leaning towards sticking with the 2" RadFlo springs I already had planned to go in and get 2.0 Rad Flow shocks.

Thoughts? Opinions? Comments? Jokes?

How you like that ATRAC now? :P Nice video!

Have always been impressed with it. I think I had one issue my very first time out but since then it has impressed me every time.

The only issues I had this trip was getting hung up on the low hanging fruit of the gas skid. The Alluminum ASFIR skid will need to meet the sledgehammer.

Thanks for sharing the video. Have always wanted to go to Moab but it’s been a logistical challenge living on the east coast.

Great driving and it looks as-if the GX held its own!

I'm headed to Moab at the end of the month. Then on to California for some work at Valley Hybrids and a short hibernation until Rubithon. Then over to Colorado for another hibernation at Proffitt's and on to FJ Summit with some flights in between to keep me at work and with the kids. Should be an epic summer!

Funny! I worked at Standard Steel in the 90s during my summer vacations in college. My dad lived in Milroy. Small world!

I had been dreaming of Moab since my 80 Series and just as I was finishing up my 80 it died and postponed this dream for a couple of years. So glad I finally got to live the dream and can’t wait to get back and I will start by doing 7 Mile Rim Trail as this is the most epic trail I have ever done in my experience in California and Baja. That trail has it all and that will be the next video once I get the files off of my buddies laptop.

OK, finally went through my photos from the Moab trip and uploaded them to my site. Still need to get photos and videos from my friends.

Just an Epic view from Golden Bar or Golden Spike Trail and just before the bumper carnage!

And this was the bypass for Golden Crack because damn it is a HUGE crack that would have swallowed these 32" tires.

Loving your Moab report. I am headed there this summer. Not planning to hit the hard trails but want to do some mild trails with my wife and 4 kids.
