Okay one more twist, for vehicles that see the extremes of BOTH hot weather and cold weather, is it better to do just the oil or the oil and the timing, OR is it actually better to have a summer clutch and a winter clutch. I definitely do not want to be running around all winter with an engine that cannot come to the proper operating temperature. I know we are all focussed on this for this summer time spell but what happens when the temps are zero or below??? Thanks.

I don't think the timing adjustment will have any effect on lower temps. When I started my clutch up in 100*F weather it would have the usual roar and then quiet down until the truck came up in temps.

In 0*F weather I doubt the air temp at the clutch when the motor is warmed up will be greater than 100*F. So it should spin with minimal force.

But running the lightest oil you can for cooling in hot weather and making sure you don't overfill the clutch is the best way to avoid problems in the cold months.

I really don't see a need for 2 clutches, but we'll see soon enough.

Holy chit, 9 pages of that I read, then realized before I wanted to stop anc pick up some oil tomorrow is the 3FE fan clutch the sme or is it different?? Mine was replaced 3+ years ago from the local stealership.
Oh SHaman lend us your incredible brain.
Dave

The 3FE clutch is not the same as a 1FZ clutch. The oil is generic in nature, the difference being the viscosity.

The factory does not disclose what the original fill is and considers the clutches to be non-serviceable.

Toyota offers 3 different viscosities, 3000, 6000 and 10,000, presumably for earlier clutches that were provided with fill ports (primarily in the 1960's and 70's).

The assumption made my the guys who have played with these is that the factory fill is most likely 3000.

The fan and coolant temps are controlled by thermostats, in cold temps the coolant thermostat will set the engine's temp and the fan will freewheel unless needed. I would be careful about setting the valve too low, or leave it stock in cold areas. I had several customers that ran 10000 cst in 20R and 3.slows powered vehicles who lived at high altitude where they get plenty of snow with no issues, on the early clutches the valve wasn't adjustable.

Valve adjustment is the "new" part of the mod, so playing, testing will need to be done to determine the best setting. I see no good reason for two clutches.

So is the 3FE clutch the non adjustable one??
Just curious, as after head gasket replacement and some issues with teh alternator slipping on the belt my cooling seems ok but I do have almost full time roar of the clutch on my 92 driving around in the summer, It would be nice to have the extra ponies when it is not needed.

Only the newer design clutches are adjustable. The original 3FE clutches were not, I haven't had a new replacement apart to see if they are.

On the older ones you can upgrade the fluid for increased performance.

come to think of it our old 3FE fan clutch roared all the time too. it often sounded like you were stuck in the wrong gear on hills until you looked at the tach.

i know the bolt pattern for the fan clutch on a bj73 is the same as on an fzj80 for both the fan mount and the clutch mount so i suspect an fzj80 adjustable fan clutch might fit on an fj80.

dave, i would consider getting a responsive temp gauge before trying the mod on a 91 if your objective is to reduce fan clutch engagment. maybe the 3FE could use some tweaking in the other direction but I'd want to know. If you pull your temp gauge, photograph it and post it on the ravantai temp gauge mod thread we could probably figure out if the same mod will work.

Well,
as much as I hat to admit it I am leaning towards ditching the clutch altogether and mounting a set of fans, one of the shops I work with does a lot of hot rods and rice burner tuner s***e and is a dealer for several different brands. I am almost ready to try it out but colder seasons here in UT and $$ seem to hold me back.
I have not donet he raventai temp mod yet but will look into it.
Dave

nothing wrong with that. if you can boost your HP and mileage on a 3FE, who's arguing?

That is the large question, the reliability of the flex fan is good but not as good as the quality of a clutch fan as far as durability. Not sure if this is the way to go I think the money would be better spent on regearing and going to some 33 x 10.50 tires as mine will need to be replaced by mid winter.

I get the feeking the consensus for a SC truck is the 10K stuff. So I can be clear, what exactly do I look for and where do I go and buy this.

Gee, and I was hoping to get a straight answer

If I wasn't hunting rabbits in the garden I would tell you to get two tubes of the 10k stuff..........................from me......

You are so slow sometimes...........

Didn't think you could ship oil. I want to do it with the PS Pump so I'll just go local to get it if SOMEONE would tell me exactly what to ask for:rolleyes:

Is this it the the 10K weight 2 tubes of Toyota 6000 cst oil P# 08816-06001.

whats the 10K part number

Why the hell didn't you ask me that when we were talking about the pump?

shakes head, not understanding Ken's thought process

I have it in stock and I could have included it with the pump.

I haven't tried it on a S/C truck. Dan has and towed with it, so I was pointing out that his experience would be more valuable for you and he sells the fluid.

In fun, LOL One choice here 10,000 cst
