is an 80 rear axle substitutable if you weld perches on there? I can't remember if the pumpkin is centered or offset as much as the 62 is.

The offset of an 80 axle is slightly different, but there are a number of people on here who have run one and had zero issues. I recommend that route.

yep. works like a charm.

Bambi, I looked through your thread, I can't tell what you did with the control arms. Is there no sway bar or anything?

I just compared the woody and the 80 and i believe i have no sway bar mounts on the 62 because they were in the way of the SUA spring perches.
The axle i got was bare except for the two spring perches. But 80s have a similar sway bar set up in the rear as 62s. So, all you may need to do is relocate the upper mount a couple inches or so and snag an 80 sway bar. I took the sway bar off prior to swapping the axle so it wasn't too much of a problem that i didn't have the mounts on the axle housing.

And you probably know this but, Johnny did this swap as well so he can answer any 80 FF questions you may have.

80 series axle is a great way to go just remember that it is a couple inches wider than a 60 series.

Just cut off all the brackets and weld on some spring perches :)

I've got my old fzj80 housing, set up for soa use, that I can't get rid of! You could have it if you weren't so far away.

Wider is better. Would it matter if the rear is wider than the front?

Johnny, I'll buy it from you with you can drop it off at a shipping terminal. I'll PM you tomorrow evening if you want when i get back home.

So quick update, I got my bearings in yesterday and was going to install everything and be done with it today. Well after I repacked the hub and bearings, and used new gaskets and put the new rotor in and everything, a friend decided to "help out". He ended up stripping the caliper bolt hole, so now that needs rethreading. Which means i have to take apart the hub again to do it right. The guy who lent me his 54 mm ( i think) socket had left and took it back with him, so tonight was done for. I was too pissed anyway so I walked away and will finish when I get more time, probably late friday. I am without a doubt the slowest working guy on this forum.

Here's some not so sexy pix.

"help out",

Bummer man. You can use a helicoil kit to repair the threads, or you can drill them out and tap for 1/2" fine thread bolt. Happened to me once as well. Good luck!

Someone told me a helicoil eventually comes out, not sure if that's true or not. Either way it forces me to learn more about this rig. I'm looking very seriously into that rear axle swap. Will PM you when i get home tonight. Thanks for all your good advice.

I second using a helicoil kit. I have used them for my KTM 250 dirt bike when I would strip out the aluminum case threads. Never had one fail and those little 2-strokes vibrate ALOT! Hope you get it all fixed up!

getting conflicting stories on this. I was about to get an 80 master cylinder to replace the stock one I have. I'm hearing two stories on this, one says it works better, helps to stop faster. The other says you need to apply more pressure to make it work, and will take longer to get the car to stop. Someone with real experience please chime in.

Lol. I have "real experience" with my fj80 master cylinder like I was telling you about. I had it on from 2009 till 2013, first with stock brakes, then with stock front calipers and rear fzj80 disks. I thought it worked just fine. However, there will always be conflicting opinions out there. You have to decide for yourself which setup you want to try out. If you don't like one setup, you can always try another.

Johnny thanks. I wasn't trying to discount your experience. You had mentioned that you had it with the 80 rear axle which worked perfectly. I was wondering if it would Matter that much with both stock axles, but since you had no issues I think I'll give it a try.

I didn't take it as discounting my advise / experience, just giving you more details on how I ran it.

There are some people that will tell you to never do a SOA for XYZ reasons too. Take my advise, and everyone else's for that matter, with a grain of salt.

Ok finally got my truck road worthy. Had to take the hub apart again to use the time sert.

It took a few tries as you can see, but it's done.

I know it's been mostly petty boring stuff lately, but state tuned for some major upgrades coming up. Pictures to follow In a day or so.

Wanted to say thanks to Jason from www.cruiseryard.com who personally delivered my own 80 axle tonight. I'm not gonna lie, that thing was heavy, not sure how he and his wife were able to get it in their truck.
After a week and a half of fighting with brakes and bearings I'm ready for some real upgrades.
Here it is

This is my only potential issue. That's where the abs sensor goes, and I'm not sure what's the best way to plug it. I'm open to suggestions.

I also ordered this kit

I'm trying to get this in next weekend, so that it's ready for round up.

Before I forget, Anyone know how much oil it takes and what's the best bang for you buck oil to buy?

EDIT:
Not sure what to do about sway bars
