BFG 33x10.50x15 MT versus AT

It's a 40, it's 35+ years old & already not quiet, your ears will NOT hear any noise diff between MT's & AT's...at least not with BFG's.

You got that right! My vintage 9.50 x33 MT's are not noisy... they just add to the symphony of sound that an early 40 with steel doors with top, or top with no doors, or no top with no doors..Ok, Ok.. or maybe some of our younger 40 owners are not used to the sound effects of a real early 40 before padded doors with cushion floor and tranny hump sound insulation was standard fare on FJ40s..I drove my first new '71 40 off the Toyota lot...there was no insulation, except in the very thinly padded roof liner. It came off the lot with your feet planted on the painted metal floor boards. Most people don't remember the drivetrain whine and tire noise of a lot of the early model 4wd vehicles. including Jeeps and Dodge Power Wagons. Music to my ears. People hear you coming, not because of the exhaust sound but of the whining symphony of gears and mechanics and non radial Dunlop Snow Cruiser or Dunlop R tires of the early 40s. and now the MT's add their voice to the wonderful sound.

I run a set of Goodyear MTRs and they are definitely loud but in comparison to all of the other noises it's just reminding me what I drive. They have worn well and I'd run them again.

Also, I've had good luck with the new Cooper STT Pros for long drives.

I definitely prefer the look of mud-terrain tyres and never noticed any noise or handling deterioration when I swapped from BFG all-terrains to BFG mud-terrains (KM2). (But then I was running a B-series diesel which may explain why I didn't notice a noise difference. B-series engines are not at all quiet at highway speeds.. And without lift or aftermarket suspension, my BJ40 always handled better than any other 40-series I've driven.)

A problem I had with the ATs was that they just wouldn't wear out.. Why is this a problem you may ask - Well I hate throwing out tyres that have a lot of tread left on them and you need to run non-perished sidewalls if you go off-roading on a regular basis (where you need to let your tyre pressures down)... So the higher wear rate of the MTs was another big plus for me in making my decision to swap (not that I would say BFG MTs wear at a fast rate though).
:)

Love the KM2's .... I switched from 10.50 31 AT's to 10.50 33 KM2's and found to my surprise that they had much better road manners than I was expecting. They're amazingly quite for an aggressive pattern and I think they ride better than my old AT's. Being one size taller probably explains the latter. Been on em for three plus years and I'm happy with em.

My 40 has MT the 45 has the AT. There is a noise difference - so much so that my bride hates riding in the 40, but has no problem with the 45.

While the motor and the inevitable rattles from the windows are loud, there is a big difference in tire hum going down the road.

That said I'll likely replace the AT's with MT's just because I'm about to start using the 5 as a field clearing vessel and log skidder with some back woods hunting duty.

Huh. Guess that droning noise was in my head... (and it suddenly went away the moment I put my AT's on)

I had the KM2 on my 100 and they were louder with the windows up than the KO2 with no top and half doors on the 40. Insane quiet in the new design.

Hands down the KM2 look cooler with steelies
