Ok, new to the fj40 scene. A few months ago I purchased ($2500) 69 with original F motor has not been started for the last 18 years minimal rust. Took it home put some marvelous mystery oil let it sit for few weeks. Started up but, has a knock. My question is, should I rebuild this engine or buy a used 2f and have it rebuild. Thanks.

Keep it original. Diagnose the problem with the F and rebuild it if necessary.

Keep in mind you can spend major money rebuilding an older engine like that. Especially since the engine builder guy may not have ever seen a "landcruiser jeep" like yours. Does "Daily Driver" mean freeways, etc? Consider a newer engine with modern stuff like fuel injection and electronic ignition. In other words, v8 crate motor and a Marks or Advance adapter.

Oh, any pics of the new baby? (FJ40 I mean).

vcruiser the first thing I would do is find out were the knock is coming from. I purchased a well used and abused 76 that had a deep knock. Turned out to be a sticking lifter. Running it with a quart of transmission fluid in the crank case for a hundred miles and an oil change and the knock is gone and after adjusting the valves the old girl is running hard and strong. May not work for you but I have found trying the easy stuff can save you big bucks and lots of time.

Sorry for not putting pictures. Here's a few. And I do want to keep it origanal. Msahr, it's going to be more like a weekender driver. Gray Beard, thanks for the advise a buddy of mine told me the same thing. I'll give it a try. Thanks for the quick response guys.

Don't butcher that with a 350. At least pull the oil pan, take off a few bearing caps, and see how bad it is. If it's totally roached out, then drop in a later 2F from an FJ60. That's a great looking truck - I like the bald, ancient tires, but I suspect you will replace those.

Congrats !!

Should you upgrade, A nice 3FE from Cruiserparts.net (they used to be about 2500.00 used and running) would fit nicely in there. Definitely a nice find!

California plates where did you score this? Although I have one already, this would've been a great one to get it appears (assuming I wanted a divorce). Plus I stopped looking... who has time to look when you spend all your time working on one... ;)
