Sanborn's Insurance for Mexico - Buy your Mexico Auto Insurance Including Car and Travel Insurance today.

Thanks guys. I checked out Sanborn and they're a good outfit. I am also a AAA member but the weenies make you go in to your local office just to get a quote. The bottom line about Mexican insurance is just how good the Mexican carrier and agent are if you happen to end up using the policy. 30 years going down there and never a need, knock on wood.

This is a key aspect many Americans fail to realize; Mexican Officials do not recognize insurance policies from outside Mexico. Be sure your carrier is affiliated with an office in Mexico and that you have contact information for that office.

I got a quote online in a couple minutes:confused:. The insurance that AAA "sells" is from a carrier in Mexico. I had a kid on a quad center punch my truck on the beach in Mexico many years ago and ended up wishing I had insurance:o.

Wow, that has to be a good/bad story.

FYI The reason I asked for advice is because this will be my first time ever purchasing a policy in advance. I have been buying my insurance at the same place since I got my first VW Baja at 16. It's one of those 24 hour drive through joints. Besides being open 24/7 they always have clean bathrooms and give you a free bag of ice if you need it. :)

Yup!

On another topic. Anybody on our roster fluent, that always makes a Mex trip more fun and safe. I kick myself in the ass all the time for not learning Spanish. I guess there is no time like the present.

If Grizzley is able to come (checking work schedule), he is fluent. I know enough spanish to ask for the bathroom and a beer. :D Never been a problem though! :)

I agree 100% I am thinking of making that one of my goals for 2008

Guys,
It is with a lot of regret that I have asked Kevin to take my name off the trip list and hopefully someone else will be lucky enough to go on this trip.

This morning I discovered that my radiator is failing and will need to be replaced ASAP. If this were the only thing I needed to do I would still be going on this trip however during the rains it became obvious that I need a new garage roof which due to cost I am installing myself. Therefore I have decided to stay home and take care of business.

Everyone have a great time, be safe and take lots of pictures.

Bummer-

Sorry to hear about the roof and the trip. I hope the rain stays minimal for ya. At least you can feel good about opening up a space for Stan.

Updated Passport/I.D. requirements for Mex travel

LAND AND SEA TRAVEL
The following summarizes information available on the Department of Homeland Security’s website.
  • JANUARY 31, 2008
U.S. and Canadian citizens will need to present either a WHTI-compliant document, or a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, plus proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate. DHS also proposes to begin alternative procedures for U.S. and Canadian children at that time.
  • SUMMER 2008
At a later date, to be determined, the departments will implement the full requirements of the land and sea phase of WHTI. The proposed rules require most U.S. citizens entering the United States at sea or land ports of entry to have either a U.S. passport; a U.S. passport card; a trusted traveler card such as NEXUS, FAST, or SENTRI; a valid Merchant Mariner Document (MMD) when traveling in conjunction with official maritime business; or a valid U.S. Military identification card when traveling on official orders.

The implementation date will be determined based on a number of factors, including the progress of actions undertaken by the Department of Homeland Security to implement the WHTI requirements and the availability of WHTI compliant documents on both sides of the border. DHS and DOS expect the date of full WHTI implementation to be in the summer of 2008. The precise implementation date will be formally announced with at least 60 days notice.
Note: The passport requirement does NOT apply to U.S. citizens traveling to or returning directly from a U.S. territory.
U.S. PASSPORT AND OTHER TRAVEL DOCUMENTS
  • U.S. Passport: U.S. citizens may present a valid U.S. passport when traveling via air, land or sea between the U.S. and the aforementioned Western Hemisphere countries.
  • The Passport Card: This limited-use, wallet-size passport card is not yet available and is under development. When available it will only be valid for land and sea travel between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean region (includes Bermuda).
  • Other Accepted Travel Documents: SENTRI, NEXUS, FAST and the U.S. Coast Guard Mariner Document. Members of the U.S. Armed Forces on active duty traveling on orders are exempt from the passport requirement. DHS has more information on these travel documents. This information may be seen at Department of Homeland Security | Preserving our Freedoms, Protecting America.
ABOUT WHTI

The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative is a result of the Intelligence Reform and Prevention Act of 2004 (IRTPA), requiring all travelers to present a passport or other document that denotes identity and citizenship when entering the U.S.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced on February 22 its intent to propose, as part of the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), significant flexibility regarding travel documents required for U.S. and Canadian children as part of WHTI requirements for U.S. land and sea border entry in 2008.

The goal of the initiative is to strengthen U.S. border security while facilitating entry for U.S. citizens and legitimate foreign visitors by providing standardized documentation that enables the Department of Homeland Security to quickly and reliably identify a traveler.

Hey Guys

GRIZZLEY just backed out as well, so there are 2 spots open now.

I've got a friend who owns a nicely modded H3 who would be interested if you guys won't heckle him too badly.:p Very nice guy, friendly and low key. He was coming along with me as a passenger but he would love to bring his rig. Can I invite him?

Sure thing Scott!

Would be great to have him along, as long as he knows "The Rules",

Recap:
-We are not stopping at the border for insurance! (no exceptions)
-No pee breaks every 15mins
-He MUST have either a CB or a 2m radio (no exceptions)
-Must have a spare tire, etc...
-If you bring children, they cant be whiners or they will be tied to a tree! :D
-Be prepared for cold!

Kevin-

Just got off the phone with Scott. I would like to take one of the spots now open. I'll PM my contact info.
My son Jeff is sixteen and not a whinner, so he will be coming with.
I'll grab Sputmik (fire tub) from Brent. Brent has many other camping toys that he can loan.

Stan

I spoke to Stan (RFJToy) this morning. He is on the waiting list for this trip and is tentatively a go. He is trying to clear his Friday trial schedule then he will confirm this afternoon.

Glad your coming Stan....I just made my first apple cobbler with my favorite new camping toy and Christmas present; a 10 qt. Lodge dutch oven. If you bring the ice cream I'll be making another cobbler for Mexico.
