used to buy my insurance by the day, but I'm now told you can get annual coverage for as low as $200 or just about a week's worth of the normal stuff. Worth looking into.
Same with tourist visa, can get annual ones.
Reportedly some Baja exped outfits in SD can get those lined up for ya...

A couple questions Kevin:

1. What will the fire/wood situation be? Will we procure wood there or bring it with us?

2. How much insurance is normal? The premium doesn't go up much with increased coverage so I'm thinking about $24K worth which runs about $75 from AAA.

I also think we should get an idea of which supplies each of us can or will bring. I usually bring everything but the kitchen sink because I want to be prepared and don't know what others are bringing. However, I don't want to bring more than is necessary. Here are some ideas:
  1. Stoves
  2. Cookware
  3. BBQ's
  4. Tables
  5. Lanterns
  6. Tunes
  7. Tent(s)
I have and can bring any of the above but we should spread it out a little ( so the dogs don't have to ride on the roof:D)

I carry all of the above but will probably leave the BBQ at home since it sounds like a couple of you will have one to use. For those of you with dutch ovens I have a dutch oven cooking table I can bring.

On Friday night I am doing the same as Kevin with the grilled sausage and for the potluck I will make a potato dish covered in cheese and onions.

I'll be bringing:
Lantern
Stove
Tables (maybe a chair:doh:)
Bag of charcoal
1-2 bundles of firewood
Tent
Bubba (aka: Lightning)

Still deciding on a dish for potluck.

Is anyone bringing the wife, GF, significant other, etc.? Mine is mildly interested and I'm trying to get a feel for the crowd.

If I bring her I have to bring all three dogs and I think that will probably be too much work.

Oh, BTW-

Are we there yet?

OK, feel free to stop me at any point if I'm starting to overthink this but I can see that you guys all come as over prepared as I do. How about if Kevin modifies post # 1 to indicate what we will all be bringing to the party? I just wanted to help avoid having 7 stoves, 7 lanterns...

Based on what I've seen, I'll comit to:
1. My Weber Smokey Joe grill, which in conjunction with Scott's, will be more than enough
2. ipod boom box (please bring your ipod if you have one as well)
3. 1 lantern
4. Firewood (we should all bring some IMO)
5. Main dish for potluck (TBD)

Kevin, you can probably leave your BBQ & stove home in appreciation for being a good host:D

no way am I sharing my tent.

Aw, c'mon Scott. I've seen your tent and it looks pretty cozy:eek: Honestly, I have a 6 person tent but with my buddy Chris and the two Dober's, I'm out of room as well

For those of you who like to gamble, I'll be bringing my cards and chips. Texas hold'em, no limit, winner takes all. Minimum buy in $25 and the winner must agree to donate 50% of the final pot to the offroad charity the group chooses.

I'm up for that but I'm not really a card player. I was considering bringing Tripoly. It's a card game but you don't need to be a card player to play.

I agree!

Wife + 3 Dogs = WAYYYYY Too much stopping for Pee Breaks!!!

I am serious about the speed of which we will be traveling and the amount of ground we will be covering

You dont wanna be "That Guy" :D

LOL! They are all seasoned travelers (with 2qt bladders), but I get the point - that's why I asked;)

:idea:I'm working on training the dogs to pee in a bottle, but I just can't get them to hold the bottle! Maybe I could just get them to pee out the window.

So, is anyone bringing there :princess:?

My wife is also interested in going. I told her I'd check.

bring a lot of gas cans (or get SoCal FJ to come along as official gas tanker :D), I hear gas is cheaper in MX than in the US now...! :)

My wife is also interested in going.

Please make sure she understands the severity of COLD! :D

This isnt going to be "Cold" as in "Cold in San Diego" 45degrees

Its going to be Alaska Cold! :D

It always is!

I make sure to fully top off my 69 gallon capacity before crossing everytime!

:D

OK Kevin let's not be overly dramatic:D. I've been in Alaska when it was 20 below without the windchill, the handle broke off the car door upon opening and the thermostat didn't open up for about 20 minutes. That's Alaska cold!

P.S. was that you I saw on the westbound 52 at about 4:00 yesterday?

I always find it easier to bring as much wood with us as we can. The folks that drive around selling it up there usually have the crappy stuff that burns wayyyyy to fast and its not cheap! I will probably bring at least 1 or 2 small grocery store size bundles! The more the merrier on firewood!

FWIW We camped at Laguna Hanson coming back from the 1000 and there were naturally felled trees that were quite dry and made great fire wood, didn't burn too fast. We only had to drive about 2 minutes from the lake bed proper to find it. Definitely best to bring your own like Kevin said but if you run low you may be able to supplement your stash when you get there.

Have a great time and enjoy a few Ballena's for me.:beer:

Hmmm...... and I have a new chainsaw and axe to cut up lots of firewood.

Just kidding :D I'm sure that the locals will not appreciate a loud borracho American felling trees in their national park and making a bon fire inferno.

I probably will throw the axe in as a trail tool though.

I of course only used naturally felled trees mi hermano baracho. ;) :flipoff2: They are good for suplemental though if supplies run low.

Who has found the best deal on Mexican insurance so far and where did you get it?

I don't know if it is the best deal but I always go through my regular car insurance company USAA to get mine. They sub it out of a company called Bravo insurance in Texas and the last time I was down in August it was something like $15 - $20 a day. I feel much better about going through my personal insurance that I know I can trust and USAA has always been good to me.

Another option is going through AAA if you are a member, I have friends who use them and got good rates.

I use triple A exclusively for all my Mex insurance! Rates arent cheap, but i trust them!

To me, piece of mind is priceless
