I took a few pics :)

THANKS to the Upstate Cruisers for hosting...fun weekend, very laid back...a nice change from some of the hectic/overscheduled events I attend...and it was nice to actually have time to talk with most everyone :)

My rear driveshaft had enough after that weekend, tossed in my spare today and magically, my vibrations went away :o Replace the trashed rear sway bar too, and took a torque wrench to everything...230k+ and it drives like new again :)

1401 miles roundtrip :)

I agree the map needs some serious updating. There are a number of trails not shown or mis-labeled. 42 and everything on that side of the park is not shown, "the jungle" and all that area.

I could probably borrow the tremble from my office for the November ACC run. I could probably get a basic shape file into ArcGIS 10.1 tied to our main map, however:
-I know just enough about the unit to be dangerous
-We are using a very old unit with ArcPad 7.1.1
-Our unit is only sub meter and I am not sure how to make the vertical correction since we generally just use it for spotting manholes, lines and valves, nothing fancy.
-I would guess that you could use that start with and build off of, but I would hate to give you crappy info that would only make you hate me. :meh:

Let me know if any of that sounds like it would be usable.

-Matthew

Matthew - you don't need to worry about vertical correction. All I need is a shp, gpx, etc of the missing trails. I have the trails in the current map as a shp already.

The version of Arcpad won't matter.

A professional grade GPS unit is going to work slow in the woods with heavy tree canopy. November would be better for a leaf-off canopy but a nice consumer grade GPS like my DeLorme PN60 I use as a backup might be the best option. I almost always have it in my FJC but I had loaned it out to a client just before OTMT.

I will grab it and plan on having it with me just in case.

My Garmin GPSmap60CSx gets pretty good signal even in heavy canopy. It will be there in November as well.

I'll have to look up the specs on that unit. Not all consumer grade GPS units are true to their accuracy claims - actually almost all are not. A professional 3-5m accurate unit is way more accurate than a consumer 3-5m unit, especially when you get into an environment where your satellite signal is occluded (partially blocked by tree canopy, buildings, terrain, etc).

So will SEO be in attendance for the November run?

Southeast Overland might - will have to see. The fall is crazy busy for us and I teach a class too fall semester.

I'm sure it's not up to snuff with commercial grade units, but it's rare that I lose signal.

Receiver:
12 channel SiRFstar III™ high-sensitivity
GPS receiver (WAAS-enabled)
continuously tracks and uses up to 12
satellites to compute and update your
position

GPS accuracy:
Position: <10 meters, typical
Velocity: .05 meter/sec steady state

Antenna:
Built-in quad helix receiving antenna

Not losing signal can be a bad thing. Its not so much how long a GPS holds signal, it is how long it holds a good signal. Many if not almost all of the consumer GPS units will hold a very weak signal which keeps your tracklog going but the accuracy will be poor - kind of like how someone earlier (maybe Sam) said his tracks from the same trail run multiple times don't overlap very nicely.

A position of <10 meters typical is going to put you around 30 feet +/- in an open environment, like in a field. When you get in the woods that will double, maybe triple.

These units are great for recreational use but I have to pull out the big guns for commercial use. Google "Trimble GeoXH." :-)

We have a 2005 (year not series) Trimble GeoXT, yeah, that's right, running pocket PC. But as long as I can keep the data manager available in ArcGIS, we just keep plugging along. Don't use it enough to justify a newer model.:meh:

Sam or Steve, did either of you get any good pictures from Saturday morning? Apparently we weren't in the cool kids group and I know I didn't get any pictures myself of any of the rigs other than the one of Sam's 4Runner coming up 2. I think Matt got a few but I haven't seen any others from the 2, 1,(38?),11 run Saturday morning.

Just curious.

Why am I not sad that I missed this with all the carnage on steering?

That sucks Nick.

Dan, you did miss out on all the fun times as well as the carnage.

On that note, I feel like GMP is becoming more difficult as previously discussed and therefore the likelyhood of carnage is increased. We had a similar situation last time (July run) where just about everyone broke something. Doesn't make it any less fun, just more expensive.

Matt, I have quite a few pictures on my camera. I was just so beat Sunday I didn't take the time to go through them. I didn't have time last night either but I'm going to try to post some tonight. A lot are from that ledge everyone was dropping down. I got a bunch of good ones of a certain silver 4Runner (including video) that should either be destroyed to hide evidence OR be used for blackmail purposes....
