Hey guys sorry I missed this meet up. I live in Marietta and have owned my ‘82 FJ40 for 4 years. I’ve done a ton of work and upgrades and it’s time for me to sell her. Problem is there is a little flutter when I decel. I’ve searched the forum so many times my eyes hurt. I’ve tried all the things. I’m stumped. Is there anyone that would be open to driving it and helping my figure out what I’m missing? Or, is there an experienced reasonable shop someone can turn me on to? Not to publicly disparage a local business, but let’s just say I’ve used ACC and it’s not really something I want to do again. Thanks for any thoughts and help! Here are some pics of my rig..

Thanks @Cornhusker. Has new AC, power steering, tons of new OeM replacements and everything works. I’m asking $35k. Tried adjusting the carb and timing yesterday again and runs strong until it gets really warm then starts the flutter. I guess I’ll call ACC for an apt Monday. I’d love to sell to a Mudder if we could agree on a fair price. I dread the auction process!

I am not certain what flutter on deceleration means. My '81 40s are similarly equipped 2Fs to yours but have never displayed flutter on deceleration that I recall.

Calling Peter is an excellent option. Let him know what you are experiencing and your expectations on how it should run. It is very likely that he will be successful in sorting it out. Good luck
 
Thanks @LDowney! Basically it’s backfiring/sputtering when RPM’s are high and I’m down shifting or slowing for a stop. It also has some flat spots during acceleration. I’ll give Peter a call tomorrow and see if we can sort it out. I appreciate the responses.

Thank you. That’s a bit more than I can afford right now. I still think it will sell fairly quick.

"some flat spots during acceleration" This could describe a carbureted 2F
"backfiring/sputtering when RPM’s are high and I’m down shifting or slowing for a stop" Could you have less back pressure than how she came from the factory? (i.e., removed cat or a replacement high flow cat installed; possible leaks in the exhaust)

These are my un-educated thoughts ... Tagging up with Peter will be a much more productive conversation and investment of your time. Good luck. Please share the results.

I had a similar issue on mine. Turned out to be the coil/igniter.

I may have a spare it you want to try swapping it out.

It must have been your red FJ40 my son saw going South on 575 near Canton a few weekends ago? If not, there is twin FJ40 in the area.
