Anyone know of a source for the 20004 oil filter?

Noel,

Not sure if it's such a good idea to keep the same oil/filter in for 2 years no matter how good they are. Acids and condensation build up under these circumstances and the color of the oil is not a good measure. I'm not saying you'll have a problem for sure, but I do know that every single oil change literature I've ever seen includes a time element (usually 1 year) as well as a mileage interval. Change is good.

DougM,

Thanks a lot for that wonderful info. I will go ahead and will do an oil and filter change this week end with Mobil Synthetic 5W30 and 15600-41010 oil filter. I know it is not a good idea to keep the oil and oil filter longer than what is required. Thanks bro.

Guys, they're out there, keep looking. I found a site today that had them, so I placed an order for 4.. I was (and still am) a little skeptical that they'll be the 90915-20004's, even though I called to verify and was told that they were, I still have a feeling that I just ordered 4 "new ones," especially since they were only $4something each.

At any rate, once my shipment comes in next week I'll know for sure, and assuming they are in fact 20004's I'll be ordering some more, let's see I"ve got 7 now, + these 4, so that's 11... so 52 more to hit the requisite 63. Once those come in I'll post where I got 'em, so you guys can gobble up the rest. :)

Thanks a lot for that wonderful info.
hope that's not anything but in the true spirit of peace and love that is ih8mud.. cause he's only trying to help dude..

Eric,

What price did you pay for those last 11 filters? I just found a case, but the parts guy quoted me $130 for it... Can't see spending $13 for a filter that I found at one time for $8... Perhaps that is what we are having to pay now for quality...

Doug,

This information may help:

"The 90915-20004 is also cross-labelled as the 90915-03005 and 90915-20002 for the Lexus SC430. They are all the same filter."

15600-41010

The 15600-41010 is the original "large" Cruiser oil filter. It has been around since the 1960's. It was first used on 2M engines in the '68 Crown. Cruisers have used them since the changeover, again in the late 60's, from canister-type oil filters. They are still available from Toyota dealers. Lexus dealers may or may not be able to still get them. That would depend on weather or not Lexus superceeded the number to the 90915-20002/4 (NOW, SADLY, GONEZOID)

The 15600-41010 is a fine filter and it does hold a lot of oil. Of course, it all spills out on the front axle housing when you remove it :flipoff2:

They are also a bit spendy with a published list price of $12.33 a rattle.

A pic is worth... The left filter is the USA mini-truck filter, the middle I believe was a V8 filter superceded by the -20004. The -YZZB9 mini-truck is just slightly smaller than the -YZZB5 which is slightly smaller than the -20004. I believe all three are resin elements filters. Ok Dan, I'll go away now ...

The YZZD3 is made in Thailand and is of a paper element type(old technolgy)....

I was at my local Toyota dealer parts shop this morning and had a conversation with the parts manager. We got on the topic about the D3 filter vs. the 20004 filter. His story is that the D3 is a Japanese filter made to the same specs as the 20004. I told him that I have read that the D3 has the paper element and the 20004 had a resin element, but all he could say was the specs are the same. The only change being the place of manufacture.. I asked him if he would cut open a D3, seeing he had two other filters already cut open. He wouldn't do it, so I told him I'd keep looking for the 20004 since they are still out there...

He's full of shiat Marty, they are not the same and the 90915-YZZD3 IS made in Thailand. It even says so on the box..

Alright, my test results are in.. though knowing that this was too good to be true in the first place made the disappointment of the afternoon a little more palatable. At any rate, here's what you get when you order a 20004 filter from autopartsauthority.com.

So on the left is the highly coveted 90915-20004, on the right is the Full® brand oil filter, made in Thailand. They appear to be the same dimensionally, but it's obvious they're different. Off to the back of the filter shelf for these guys, maybe some day they'll find their way onto a 1FZ.. not this year.

Interchangeable with 90915-20004 does not = 90915-20004 :/

Thanks for "taking one for the team" and telling us the truth about these, if you feel bad enough about it you could demand a refund if they refuse dispute it on your CC

Could you post up the site that pulled this?

Agree that's bullshiat, but in this day and age it would be wise to insist that they pull one off the shelf and read the numbers off the shelf, confirm it's a Denso box, count the holes in the filter base, etc. That applies to WHOEVER you're ordering them from, because the minimum wage guy at an international parts house desk didn't intentionally deceive you - he's just selling what's listed in his inventory and has no idea some desk clerk along the way decided these were THAT filter.

I'm not bummed, I knew what I was getting into. Like I said I was hoping to get lucky, but in reality I'm merely building the inventory for when 20004's are no more, figure once I run these cheapies just lower the OCI a little bit, maybe every 3 monts? Whole thing set me back like $18, so bfd...

raven, they're from http://www.autopartsauthority.com

edit: just noticed today my credit card statement says ALL OEM PARTS, INC. TEL8886283247NJ um, yeah.. all OEM.. :flipoff2:
