Anyone know of a source for the 20004 oil filter?

Looks like the one I saw at Sears, not sure about the scale. I'm down to a couple big filters anyway.

Doug,

If you can't get them from c-dan you might check eBay. There was a guy selling them in quantity. They had the Lexus logo but appeared to be genuine 20004 Toyota filters and the BIN price was very reasonable as I recall.

this is what I use if I can't get one off, usally I can just turn by hand but some tighten up, and the reason bought the tool in the 1st place is when we got the 90 fj62 the filter was NOT moving.

you won't bust this unit and it works VERY well, only $25(before my begging and pleading discount) It fits big or little filters

Regarding the oil filters

What tool is everyone using to remove the filter. I'm on my second oil change w/M1, but this time the dang 20004 filter will not come off! I have broken a couple of cheaper filter removers, and don't want to fill w/crappy oil, drive to "jiffy lube", just to get the filter off!

Like others, we are hoarding our stash of 20004's

I went with what the FSM recommended last time... seal touching plus half turn (IIRC), which I had trouble getting with the filter wrench. I believe I'm screwed, come next oil change :(.

R2,

>> seal touching plus half turn <<

The key is carefully noting when the seal is touching. If you tighten the -04 filters hand tight then you cannot get them off after 3,000+ miles; at least not by hand.

Look carefully at the seal and then sloooooooooowly spin it on and pay close attention to when the seal touches ever so slightly. Then the half turn and no more. (I can't recall if it is 1/2 turn or 1/4 turn but whatever the specs say.)

I played with this for years, using less and less turn on the 04's. They still don't leak at 1/4 turn and I could remove them with 3 fingers. I'll miss them - sob,....boo hoo....

Getting a bit off topic here, but my truck was double gasketed by the dealer at it's first oil change. The filter gasket from the factory install stuck to the block, the new filter gasket sealed to that gasket briefly. They soon parted and the engine was trashed. How often does that happen?

I use a rubber strap wrench to remove stubborn filters. Works fine.
For really recalcitrant ones, I'd use a chain pipe wrench. No way that wouldn't work...

The YZZD3 is made in Thailand and is of a paper element type(old technolgy), personally before I use this filter I would use the older bigger filter (15600-41010) which is also a paper filter element but the element has many more square inches of filtering media. If you are doing oil changes at every 3k miles then the YZZD3 might be your filter(which is a waste of oil IMHO). The other filters are good for the 7-10k mile interval that toyota reccommends in the manuals for oil changes. The loss of the 20004 filter is a sad statement of toyota USA commitment to the owner, price over longivity. too bad toyota USA. later robbie

WIX filters are rated pretty high in terms of filtration, and have the same anti-drainback valve that the OEM filter does.

Many people have said they use those in lieu of OEM.

Noel,

Not sure if it's such a good idea to keep the same oil/filter in for 2 years no matter how good they are. Acids and condensation build up under these circumstances and the color of the oil is not a good measure. I'm not saying you'll have a problem for sure, but I do know that every single oil change literature I've ever seen includes a time element (usually 1 year) as well as a mileage interval. Change is good.

hey Noel --

What I would do is start calling dealers' parts dept. around the country -- and asking for the part # and having them track them down and call you back with their response --

-- I live in CT and got these loves at a little over $8 per filter -- it was only $7 shipping on the 11 --

If anybody really is concerned about using alternative filters, then I suggest that they research whether or not Denso is still manufacturing the equivalent 20004 filter (with or without Toyota lableling). If Denso is still manufacturing the filter, then it is merely a matter of finding out who is selling it.

So far I've sent them an email twice. Denso has a filter on their website that looks like the 04, but so far no word on it.

DougM

the 90915-20002 filter (lexus box) has Denso part 115010-1950 printed on the side
the 90915-20004 filter (toyota box) has Denso part 115010-5020

Maybe with those #'s we can find replacements? Has anyone ever seen a Denso filter for sale in the US besides at a dealer? For that mater don’t think I have ever seen a Japanese made filter for sale in a parts store,

The two have slight differences at the open end, the 20004 has a red o-ring and the plate is concave where the 20002 is convex with a black o-ring, I have heard the 20002 has the same media, have not cut one open yet to find out
