Black balsma will be opening up soon (got the ranger phone number and trying to contact every couple of hours, waiting to catch someone at the office to verify vechilcle access)

I'm wanting to hit up the place with a couple other rigs before i take the wife/kids up there.

Anyone game after the 15th? I need an excues to try out the new meats on the rig as well as maybe the winch.

I was up on the BRP last Sunday and the weather was great. Temps for the most part in the low 70's at 4500+ feet. Nice camping weather and this would be a great escape from the heat we have been having.

If you get a hold of a ranger and he gives you the thumbs up make sure to get his name. Black Balsam Road (or whatever it is called) is not on the MVUM (Motor Vehicle Use Map.) Just want you to be covered...

i wouldn't mind riding up there as long as it is a sat. or a sunday that i am not working.

if we don't get an ok i'll be sending you a PM Steve....i really want to do some camping soon.

If not i'm packing up the boat and hitting the coast for some empty islands (dodging storms)

Not this month. I'm booked. Going to the beach the week of the 15th, going to Lineville the next week and going down to Givhans Ferry the weekend after that.

i won't be taking the rigs unless it's open to vehicle traffic....which is why i'll be hitting Steve up for ideas if i don't get an "all clear" from the ranger station.

And once the sailboat is done (it's back on the slate to be finished in 3-4 weeks now that the 40 is back on the road) i'll be taking a lot more weekend primitive camping trips. It's much easier to sail to an empty part of the lake, ICW, island than it is to hike or in many cases drive.

Just make sure that deserted island isn't a protected seashore. They don't like camping on those as much as the mountain guys don't like us on the unmarked roads.

the "camping" will be done in the boat.

Just go to shore for the day to let the kiddos play and drink a cold one or 6....maybe get the poles in the water.

i'm sure it's 4-7 deg cooler in higher elevations!

then again i prefer the heat.

I might be up at Black Balsam the weekend of Aug. 27-28.... would that work for you?

And yes Black Balsam opens up every year on August 15th to Jan. 2nd and is PERFECTLY LEGAL, I have been down it many times, have had rangers come by and chat with me at my camp. It is open for hunting access and gets plenty of use; if it wasn't legal then why would the rangers unlock the big brown gate where the road begins every Aug. 15th??? It would be locked like it is the other 8 months of the year.

Sorry Steve, not directing this at you....... I just wanted to clarify as this comes up every year and we go through this whole debate everytime.

IT IS OPEN AND LEGAL.... end of story :flipoff2:
