Antenna Mast Replacement - How To

Did you buy OEM or something else? Post up a link if you bought it online.

I bought one off amazon and the white plastic piece was longer than it needed to be so I clipped it down to size.
I bought mine from Amazon also. On mine the base metal of antenae will not go past the metal on the lx that the bolt screws on, hope that makes sense

So I changed mine out using the OEM mast off eBay. And followed the directions here. Thanks for the write-up. My feeder was intact so I just had to feed the new one it. After fiddling with it for a bit I got it. I was doing it solo threw the passenger door and reaching for the button. Anyway note: if it makes noise and it's installed correctly don't worry. The Teflon feeder cable just needs to settle into its new home and will be quiet in the next day or two. I figured as much so I waited to post.

Replaced my mast yesterday. Had to pull the motor and remove the old plastic cable. It 100% broke off at the base of the mast. Whole damn thing got sucked in. Pretty straight forward repair.

I recently replaced mine as well. I was nervous about yanking the old one out because it took quite a bit of force, but it didn't break.

I didn't grease the new one. Is it necessary to grease it? And is that greasing the cable, or the mast itself?

And I just remembered I didnt pull the protective condom (plastic bag) back down around the motor assembly when I finished. DAG NABBIT! :bang:

I've not been greasing the nylon. But if I do, I was thinking bicycles Teflon lubricant to reduce risk of attracting dust and safe on plastic TMK.

Hi Everyone,

I have a 2000 Lexus LX470 and am replacing the antenna. I purchased a new antenna off ebay from a reputable seller. At first the new antenna mast appeared longer than the old antenna mast, so I removed the antenna motor assembly and retrieved the broken off section of antenna mast only to discover my new antenna mast is about 6 inches shorter than the original antenna when factoring in the broken off piece. ...

So to put it simply is it ok to install a new antenna, that has a mast that is shorter than the original antenna.... will it still work?

Any help is appreciated and thank you in advance! :) :) :)

If plastic teeth do not out come out of gear as you raise to max, it should be ok. I'm not to concerned with down, as I've seem them stop short of full down when resistance is to great.

Which ebay seller sold you this?

Thanks so much!!! --My dad actually thought similar, just wanted to double check before reassembling. :)

And, "luffygroup", they have a 98.5% feedback rating and sold at least 277 of them according to their page.

I just purchased the amazon one above for 19 bucks for my 2003 LC. Installed it in 15 minutes.

Seems fine to me it's been on about a week. I'd heard the flimsy issue and expected it to be bending while driving....its not. Worth the 19 bucks.

I replaced two last year from Lexus LX470 AM/FM Power Antenna MAST 1998-2007 LX 470 | eBay . They claim to be OEM, but I never did match up to an OEM to see. I no longer have those 100's, so can't check, but they worked fine.

Is this really as good as OEM?

Official Toyota OEM, 80 bucks?

These two are the same seller. Antenna Masts R Us = The Antenna Source.

I purchased one from them awhile back. It lasted about a year. After that, it would pop out and hang over the side, only held on by the geared plastic cord. I could not get the plastic/rubber retaining ring to 'retain' the mast.

@hoser thanks for the heads up.

As I said; I did not have long, so no history on my purchases. This guy claims OEM, not equivalent or after market. It would be a fluke to have OEM pop out at retainer, or at least I've not seen this. I 've only seen OEM plastic cord break which is all to common IMHO.

^^^^^^^ Yeah, kind of scary the amount of force necessary to pull the toothed cable out, you'd swear something is going to break before it comes out (and probably does in some cases).

The cable appears to be Nylon or something similar. It is quite smooth and already has a certain amount of lubricity, so it should not be necessary to lubricate that part. The mast itself might benefit from a 'dry' lubricant or a light coat of silicone spray from time to time, but I think just keeping it clean is the better way to go. Definitely do NOT grease it, it will only gather dust and grit that way.

Over time... any exposed surfaces of the telescoping mast are going to begin to oxidize and accumulate road grime, so to me..it makes better sense to just clean the mast (restore clearances) than to try to lubricate it.

I have a video on how to replace this antenna mast as well as remove the old nylon cord that broke of in the assembly. see link bellow. Hope this helps some of you folks. In the description i added the amazon link i used to get my antenna that looks exactly the same as the OEM one i have a 98 LX470.
